Claude Code 2.1.319 adds permissions.denyInsteadOfPrompting: a tool call that would wait on a permission prompt is denied and the turn carries on.

Claude Code 2.1.319, released on 6 November 2026, adds a setting called permissions.denyInsteadOfPrompting. The [changelog](https://github.com/anthropics/claude-code/releases/tag/v2.1.319) says that with it, "a tool call that would wait on a permission prompt is denied and the turn continues, in terminal sessions, subagents and teammates". A run you left alone no longer sits on one question until you come back.

## What denyInsteadOfPrompting changes #

Until now an unattended Claude Code session had two ways to go when it reached a command it wasn't allowed to run. It waited on the prompt, or you had given it a mode that asks less, up to bypassPermissions. The first costs you the night. The second is the mode Anthropic says to use only in isolated environments, and our [guide to skipping permissions safely](https://shuriken.sh/guides/skip-permissions-safely) explains why.

This setting is a third way. Your allow and deny rules stay as they are. A call that would have needed your answer is refused instead, and the turn goes on without it. You read in the morning what it was not allowed to do, instead of finding it stopped at 01:00 on the first npm install.

Two notes on what we could check. When we read the [settings reference](https://code.claude.com/docs/en/settings-reference) on 7 November 2026 it didn't list the key yet, so the changelog line is all Anthropic has published about it. And it covers subagents and agent teammates too, not only the session you started.

## Two more changes for long runs #

MCP tasks. Some MCP servers run a long job, an export or a build, as a task of their own. Since 2.1.319 Claude Code moves such a call to the background at once and tells Claude the result when it finishes ([MCP docs](https://code.claude.com/docs/en/mcp)). Set CLAUDE_CODE_DISABLE_MCP_TASK_BACKGROUND to make it wait inside the tool call as before. Background commands and /tasks are covered in [Claude Code background tasks](https://shuriken.sh/guides/claude-code-background-tasks); 2.1.319 also adds an "Earlier in this session" row to /tasks that lists finished subagents, so you can reopen one and message it after a restart.

Sign-ins that run out. 2.1.318 (4 November) prints loginExpiresAt in claude auth status and credential_expires_at in claude -p JSON results, and claude -p text output warns on stderr from 10 days before a stored claude.ai sign-in ends ([2.1.318 notes](https://github.com/anthropics/claude-code/releases/tag/v2.1.318)). If you script overnight jobs, that is a field to check before you start one. The rest of the overnight checklist (staying awake, surviving a closed terminal, usage limits) is in [running Claude Code overnight](https://shuriken.sh/guides/run-claude-code-overnight).

Shuriken's Heroin mode keeps the computers you pick awake while your agents run.

## Where Shuriken fits #

Shuriken runs Claude Code in its chats, so a permission question there doesn't wait in a terminal. The chat turns to Needs you, and you can answer it from [your phone](https://shuriken.sh/features/phone). That covers the nights you want to be asked. For the nights you don't, denyInsteadOfPrompting is now the setting to read about.

## Frequently asked questions

**What does denyInsteadOfPrompting do?**

Claude Code's 2.1.319 changelog says a tool call that would wait on a permission prompt is denied and the turn continues. It applies in terminal sessions, subagents and teammates.

**Is it in the Claude Code settings reference?**

Not when we read the reference on 7 November 2026. The 2.1.319 changelog is the only Anthropic page that describes it so far, and it doesn't show an example value.

**How do I see when my Claude Code sign-in ends?**

From 2.1.318, claude auth status shows loginExpiresAt, and claude -p JSON results carry credential_expires_at. claude -p text output also warns on stderr from 10 days before a stored claude.ai sign-in ends.

**What are MCP tasks in Claude Code?**

Long jobs an MCP server runs itself. Since 2.1.319 the terminal moves such a call to the background right away and tells Claude the result when it finishes. CLAUDE_CODE_DISABLE_MCP_TASK_BACKGROUND makes it wait instead.

Heroin mode

Close the lid. Your agents keep working.

Pick which of your computers stay awake while agents work. On a Mac that holds with the lid closed, and on Windows and Linux where the laptop allows it.
