There's no single best Claude Code GUI: Claude Code Desktop is the official app included with your plan, Conductor and Agentastic are Mac-first, Orca and Emdash are free and open source, and Claude Squad is for the terminal. Shuriken fits if you juggle several accounts or devices.

We make Shuriken, one of the apps on this list. We tried to be fair; corrections welcome at office@shuriken.sh.

## Quick answer #

There's no single best Claude Code GUI; there's a best one for what you need. Start with Claude Code Desktop if you want the official app included with your plan. Pick Conductor or Agentastic for Mac-first polish, Orca or Emdash for free and open source on every OS, Claude Squad for the terminal, and Shuriken if you juggle several accounts or devices.

No stars, scores or "winner" badges below. We haven't run benchmarks, and a rating from a vendor about its rivals isn't worth much. What you get instead is what each app is, where it runs and what it costs, from its own site on 22 October 2026.

## Quick picks by need #

| If you want… | Try |
| --- | --- |
| The official app, included with your Claude plan | Claude Code Desktop |
| A polished Mac app for parallel agents | Conductor, Agentastic |
| Free and open source, on Mac, Windows and Linux | Orca, Emdash |
| A terminal UI, no desktop app | Claude Squad |
| Claude inside your code editor | Zed |
| A visual workspace with docs and a wiki | Nimbalyst |
| Several Claude or ChatGPT accounts that switch by themselves, on every device | Shuriken |

## The apps #

### Claude Code Desktop (Anthropic) #

The Code tab in Anthropic's Claude desktop app. Parallel sessions in a sidebar, each optionally in its own git worktree; a diff view with line comments; a terminal; a browser pane for previewing your app; scheduled tasks; and sessions that run locally, in Anthropic's cloud, or over SSH. It bundles Claude Code, so you don't need the CLI or Node.js.

- Platforms: macOS (universal), Windows (x64 and ARM64), Linux beta (apt or .deb for Ubuntu and Debian).
- Price: needs a Claude Pro, Max, Team or Enterprise plan.
- Good to know: Claude only, on the Anthropic account you sign in with. First to get Anthropic's own features.

### Conductor #

"Run parallel coding agents on your Mac." Claude Code, Codex and Cursor agents in isolated workspaces, with review and merge built in. Cloud workspaces run in sandboxes on the paid plans, and Pro includes a mobile app.

- Platforms: macOS, going by its site.
- Price (USD): Free; Pro $50/month; Teams $60 per user a month; Enterprise custom.
- Good to know: bring your own subscriptions and keys on every plan.

### Superset #

"One workspace for Claude Code, Codex, and any coding agent." Worktrees, automations, remote access, a CLI, a TypeScript SDK and an MCP server for scripting it, plus an iPhone and iPad app. Its site says it is getting a new name soon.

- Platforms: macOS; Linux as an experimental AppImage; Windows not yet available.
- Price (USD): Free for one user; Pro $20 per user a month, or $15 billed yearly; Enterprise custom.
- Good to know: 14 agents named on its site, and any CLI agent per its FAQ.

More in [Shuriken vs Superset](https://shuriken.sh/compare/superset).

### Orca #

"Ship 100x with the agent IDE." Parallel worktrees, fast terminal splits, a design mode in an embedded Chromium window, GitHub and Linear inside the app, SSH remote worktrees, and a CLI that lets agents drive Orca. It can swap between several Claude accounts in one click, even with live sessions running.

- Platforms: macOS, Windows, Linux; iOS and Android companion apps.
- Price: free, MIT licensed.
- Good to know: 27 named agents plus any CLI agent. Account swaps are one click, started by you; its docs describe no automatic switch at a limit.

More in [Shuriken vs Orca](https://shuriken.sh/compare/orca).

### Emdash #

"Open-source agentic development environment." Each task in its own git worktree; issues from Linear, GitHub, Jira and many more sent straight to an agent; diffs, pull requests and CI checks in one place; schedules; SSH to remote machines; a library for prompts, skills and MCP servers.

- Platforms: macOS, Windows, Linux (x64 and ARM64).
- Price: free, Apache-2.0.
- Good to know: "25+ coding agents", detected automatically. Backed by Y Combinator.

More in [Shuriken vs Emdash](https://shuriken.sh/compare/emdash).

### Nimbalyst #

A visual workspace for agents, tasks, docs, wiki, diagrams and code, with "a wiki your agents write for you". An iPhone and iPad app is free during its beta; Android is planned. The app works with your existing Claude Code or Codex subscription or API key.

- Platforms: macOS, Windows, Linux (AppImage).
- Price: the app is free for individuals; Wiki Teams is a paid plan, free during its beta.
- Good to know: described on its site as free, local and open source. It replaced Crystal, which its README says was deprecated in February 2026.

### Agentastic #

"The Multi-Agent IDE for Your AI Software Factory." A native Mac app with Manager Agents that steer workers for days, worktrees or containers, a browser with Design Mode, and agents on SSH servers, Modal, Fly or Vercel Sandbox. An iPhone app is in TestFlight.

- Platforms: macOS 14 Sonoma or later; its CLI runs on macOS, Linux or WSL.
- Price: "Free without limits. No sign-up required."
- Good to know: 55 built-in agent definitions.

More in [Shuriken vs Agentastic](https://shuriken.sh/compare/agentastic).

### Claude Squad #

A terminal app that runs several agents at once, using tmux for sessions and git worktrees so each works on its own branch. Claude Code by default, plus Codex, Gemini, Aider, OpenCode, Amp and any local agent you point it at.

- Platforms: terminals with tmux; installs with Homebrew or a script.
- Price: free, AGPL-3.0.
- Good to know: the lightest option here if you never want to leave the terminal.

### Zed #

Not a Claude Code GUI as such: a fast code editor that runs Claude Code as an external agent over the Agent Client Protocol, next to its own agent and others such as Codex and Gemini CLI. Parallel threads, optionally each in its own worktree.

- Platforms: macOS, Windows, Linux.
- Price (USD): Personal $0, including unlimited use with external agents; Pro $10/month; Business $30 per seat a month.
- Good to know: each external agent keeps its own sign-in and billing.

More in [Shuriken and Zed](https://shuriken.sh/compare/zed).

### Shuriken (ours) #

A harness that runs Claude Code, Codex, Gemini CLI and 64 more agents on your own computers and servers, each chat on its own branch in its own worktree if you want. Built for people with more than one account: when the account in use reaches your switch point (99% by default) or a provider limit, chats move to another of yours and keep going, mid-task, on every device at once. Also: [session limits](https://shuriken.sh/features/session-clock), [global MCPs](https://shuriken.sh/features/global-mcps), a browser with Design mode, voice, Open in 44 editors and terminals, and a background service that keeps agents running with the window closed.

- Platforms: macOS 13+ (Apple silicon), Windows 10 and 11 (x64), Linux (AppImage and .deb, x64 and Arm), headless servers; a phone web app, with native iOS and Android apps planned for November 2026.
- Price (EUR, VAT included for EU consumers): Free €0 (two sources, two linked devices); Pro €49 a month or €490 a year (2 months free).
- Good to know: no managed cloud sandboxes; agents run on machines you own. If you only ever use one Claude account, much of what makes Shuriken different won't matter to you.

In Shuriken a chat can work on its own branch in its own worktree, and Finish merges it after your checks.

## How we'd choose #

Start with the official app. If Claude Code Desktop does what you need, it's the simplest answer, and you already pay for it.

Write down what you need first. Our checklist on [how to choose an app for your coding agents](https://shuriken.sh/guides/choose-a-coding-agent-app) is eight questions that apply to every app below, ours included.

Then ask what's missing. Usually it's one of four things: other agents next to Claude (most apps here), Windows or Linux (Orca, Emdash, Nimbalyst, Shuriken), staying in the terminal (Claude Squad), or running out of usage halfway through the day. That last one is why we built Shuriken: chats move between your own accounts by themselves. If you'd rather do it with a CLI, our [Claude account switchers comparison](https://shuriken.sh/compare/claude-account-switchers) covers the free options fairly. Only use accounts you own and are entitled to use.

Try two. All of these run your own Claude Code on your own plan, and most have a free tier, so the cheapest test is an afternoon with two of them on a real task. If Shuriken is one of your two, [download it here](https://shuriken.sh/download).

## Frequently asked questions

**Is there an official Claude Code desktop app?**

Yes. Claude Code is the Code tab in Anthropic's Claude desktop app, for macOS, Windows and Linux (beta). It needs a Pro, Max, Team or Enterprise plan.

**What's the best free Claude Code GUI?**

Orca (MIT) and Emdash (Apache-2.0) are free and open source on macOS, Windows and Linux. Agentastic is free on macOS 14 or later. Claude Code Desktop comes with your paid Claude plan.

**Which Claude Code GUIs work on Windows?**

From the sites we read on 22 October 2026: Claude Code Desktop, Orca, Emdash, Nimbalyst and Shuriken have Windows apps, and Zed runs on Windows. Conductor and Agentastic are Mac apps, and Superset says Windows isn't available yet.

**Which Claude Code GUIs work on Linux?**

Orca, Emdash, Nimbalyst and Shuriken ship Linux apps. Claude Code Desktop has a Linux beta for Ubuntu and Debian, and Superset has an experimental AppImage.

**Do these apps include Claude usage?**

No. Claude Code runs on your own Claude plan or API key in every app here. Some, like Zed, also sell other hosted models; Shuriken never bills model usage.

Parallel agents

Agents side by side, each on its own branch if you want.

A new chat gets its own branch and worktree unless you pick the project folder, so agents don't step on each other. Finish runs your checks and merges each one back.
