# Claude Code alternatives: the terminal agents worth trying

> Which Claude Code alternative fits depends on your plan: Codex on ChatGPT, Copilot CLI on any Copilot plan, OpenCode for any model. 13 agents, sourced.

Source: https://shuriken.sh/compare/claude-code-alternatives

The strongest Claude Code alternatives are Codex CLI and Copilot CLI if you already pay OpenAI or GitHub, OpenCode for any model under an open-source licence, and Antigravity CLI for Google's models without a paid plan. Aider, goose, Cline and Qwen Code are open source too.

## Quick answer #

The Claude Code alternatives worth trying are other terminal coding agents, and the right one depends mostly on what you already pay for. On a ChatGPT plan, try Codex CLI. On any GitHub Copilot plan, Copilot CLI is included. For any model under an open-source licence, OpenCode. For Google's models without a paid plan, Antigravity CLI, because Gemini CLI stopped taking personal sign-ins on 18 June 2026.

We read every vendor's own page on 24 October 2026 for the 13 agents below. This page is about agents, the programs that do the coding. Apps that put a window around Claude Code are a different question, answered in [the best Claude Code apps and GUIs](https://shuriken.sh/compare/best-claude-code-apps).

## Claude Code alternatives at a glance #

Claude Code's own row comes first, so you can read every other row against it. Prices are in US dollars, as each vendor listed them on 24 October 2026.

"No source published" means the vendor's pages name no open-source licence and we found no public repository for the program.

## What each alternative does well #

### Codex CLI #

OpenAI's agent is the closest like-for-like swap. It's Apache-2.0, so you can read and build the code, and OpenAI's pricing page includes Codex in every ChatGPT plan from Free ($0) and Go ($8) up to Pro. That beats Claude Code on one point outright: Claude Code needs a paid plan or a Console account. codex --oss runs it on a local model through Ollama or LM Studio. The plans, limits and MCP files side by side are in [Claude Code vs Codex](https://shuriken.sh/compare/claude-code-vs-codex).

### Copilot CLI #

GitHub's docs say "All plans include Copilot CLI and the Copilot app", Copilot Free among them, although Free and Student get Auto model selection only. Pro is $10 a month, Pro+ $39 and Max $100, and the higher plans add premium models such as Claude Opus 5.5. You can also point it at your own provider, Anthropic, Azure OpenAI or a local model in Ollama. The CLI itself is proprietary. How its monthly credits compare with Claude's 5-hour window is in [GitHub Copilot vs Claude Code](https://shuriken.sh/compare/github-copilot-vs-claude-code).

### OpenCode #

OpenCode is MIT-licensed and model-agnostic: 75+ providers through Models.dev, local servers such as Ollama and LM Studio, and free models included. It signs in with a GitHub Copilot or ChatGPT Plus/Pro account. It doesn't take a Claude Pro or Max sign-in: its providers page says "Anthropic explicitly prohibits this", and it stopped bundling the plugins that did it in 1.3.0. Our [OpenCode vs Claude Code](https://shuriken.sh/compare/opencode-vs-claude-code) page covers models, price and terms.

### Amp #

Amp's Hobby tier is free. You bring your own keys or subscriptions, the pricing card says "No Amp token fees or limits", and only Amp-hosted orbs cost money, pay as you go. An orb is a remote machine where the agent keeps working after you close your laptop, one per thread. Individual starts at $20 a month (Megawatt), with 45,000 minutes of Amp-hosted orb time. The card also lists Claude subscriptions; before you connect one, read Anthropic's rule in [using your Claude plan in other tools](https://shuriken.sh/guides/claude-subscription-in-other-tools). More in [Amp vs Claude Code](https://shuriken.sh/compare/amp-vs-claude-code).

### Cursor CLI #

Cursor's terminal agent runs as agent, with Plan and Ask modes next to the default Agent mode, and it reads the same MCP configuration as the Cursor editor. Its model list spans Anthropic, OpenAI, Gemini, Grok and Cursor's own Composer. Cursor's plans run from Free ($0, "Limited agent requests") through Plus $8, Premium $30, Super $100 and Ultra $200. If you live in the Cursor editor, read [Cursor vs Claude Code](https://shuriken.sh/compare/cursor-vs-claude-code).

### Antigravity CLI and Gemini CLI #

These two are one story. On 18 June 2026 Google stopped serving Gemini CLI for Google AI Pro and Ultra and for the free Code Assist for individuals. Gemini CLI stays Apache-2.0 and keeps working on a Code Assist Standard or Enterprise licence or a paid Gemini API key. Everyone else goes to Antigravity CLI (agy). Google's plans page lists "the CLI" among the features of every plan, and users not on AI Pro or Ultra get "a meaningful quota, refreshed weekly". It still reads GEMINI.md and AGENTS.md, while MCP servers move to mcp_config.json. Which of the two you can still use is in [Gemini CLI vs Antigravity CLI](https://shuriken.sh/compare/gemini-cli-vs-antigravity-cli), and [Claude Code vs Gemini CLI](https://shuriken.sh/compare/claude-code-vs-gemini-cli) has the June change in Google's words.

### Aider #

Aider is Apache-2.0, works with "almost any LLM, including local models", and "automatically commits changes with sensible commit messages", so each edit is a git commit you can diff or undo. It has no MCP client: neither its README nor its options mention one. The full pairing is in [Claude Code vs Aider](https://shuriken.sh/compare/claude-code-vs-aider).

### goose #

goose is Apache-2.0 and now part of the Agentic AI Foundation at the Linux Foundation. It comes as a desktop app for macOS, Linux and Windows plus a CLI, works with 15+ providers, Ollama included, and its desktop setup offers a ChatGPT subscription as one way in. MCP is its extension system: the README counts 70+ extensions.

### Cline #

Cline comes as a VS Code extension, a JetBrains plugin and a desktop app, and the same agent runs in a terminal after npm i -g cline. The repository and the CLI are Apache-2.0; Cline's README says the JetBrains plugin isn't open source. In the terminal, cline mcp manages MCP servers. It takes Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, OpenRouter, Bedrock, Ollama, LM Studio and more, so the provider choice is yours.

### Qwen Code #

Alibaba's agent is Apache-2.0 and talks to OpenAI, Anthropic, Gemini and Qwen APIs, plus local models through Ollama or vLLM. Its free sign-in is gone: the docs say "The Qwen OAuth free tier was discontinued on 2026-04-15". Today it runs on QwenCloud, an Alibaba ModelStudio Coding Plan, or another provider's key.

### Kiro #

Kiro's CLI comes with the Kiro subscription. The "perpetual Kiro Free tier" includes 50 credits a month, open-weight models and Claude Sonnet 4.5; Pro is $20 with 1,000 credits, up to Power at $200 with 10,000. It reads steering files and MCP settings from a project's .kiro/ folder. Kiro's licence page says the IDE and CLI "are each licensed to you as “AWS Content” under the AWS Customer Agreement", and no source is published.

### Factory Droid #

Droid is Factory's agent, run as droid, with droid exec for scripts and CI. Factory's plans are Pro $20, Plus $100 (about 5x Pro) and Max $200 (about 10x), and the pricing page lists no free tier. Its bring-your-own-key setup takes Anthropic, OpenAI, OpenRouter, Ollama and others in ~/.factory/settings.json; the docs don't say whether that needs a paid plan.

## Free Claude Code alternatives #

"Free" means different things here, so we only use the word where the vendor does. Free to start, with the vendor's own models: Codex on ChatGPT Free, Copilot CLI on Copilot Free (Auto model only), Antigravity CLI for Google users without a paid plan (weekly quota), Kiro Free (50 credits a month), Cursor Free (limited agent requests), and OpenCode's free models. Programs that cost nothing to install, where you pay the model provider: Aider, goose, Cline and Qwen Code, which are open source and also run a local model on your own computer, and Amp's Hobby tier, which Amp lists as free. Gemini CLI is no longer one of them for personal accounts, and Qwen Code's free sign-in ended in April. Google's side of this is in [Gemini CLI alternatives after the June 2026 change](https://shuriken.sh/compare/gemini-cli-alternatives).

## Open-source Claude Code alternatives #

Codex CLI, Gemini CLI, Aider, goose, Cline and Qwen Code are Apache-2.0; OpenCode is MIT. Claude Code, Copilot CLI, Amp, Kiro and Factory Droid are proprietary, and Cursor and Google publish no source for their CLIs.

Shuriken shows what every plan you hold has left in one figure, and what each turn costs as it runs.

[Download](https://shuriken.sh/download)

## A Claude Code alternative for Windows #

Claude Code itself runs on native Windows 10 1809+ and in WSL, so Windows alone isn't a reason to switch. Of the others, Codex CLI, Cursor CLI, Antigravity CLI, Qwen Code and Aider have PowerShell installers, Copilot CLI installs with winget install GitHub.Copilot, goose has a PowerShell script, and Kiro and Factory list Windows. OpenCode installs natively through Chocolatey, Scoop or npm but recommends WSL. Codex's native and WSL routes are covered in [Codex CLI on Windows](https://shuriken.sh/guides/codex-cli-on-windows).

## A Claude Code alternative with other models #

If you want GPT, Gemini, Grok or open-weight models, OpenCode, Aider, Cline, goose, Qwen Code and Factory Droid take almost any provider's key, and Copilot CLI, Cursor CLI and Kiro bundle several companies' models in their plans. You may not need to switch at all: Claude Code runs on a local model through Ollama ([the setup](https://shuriken.sh/guides/claude-code-with-ollama)), and Codex does the same with --oss ([local models in Codex](https://shuriken.sh/guides/codex-cli-local-models)).

## Where Shuriken is different #

Shuriken isn't one more agent on this list. It's a harness: it runs these agents, Claude Code included, on your own computers, with the sign-ins and keys you already have. All 13 above are among the [67 coding agents](https://shuriken.sh/features/coding-agents) it runs. Most open as a Shuriken chat; Aider runs in its own terminal interface inside the app. Shuriken never bills model usage: your Claude plan pays for Claude Code, your ChatGPT plan for Codex, and so on.

## Pricing #

What each vendor charges for the agent's own plan, in US dollars, as listed on 24 October 2026. API keys are billed by each provider at its own rates.

| Agent | Free option | Paid plans |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Claude Code | None (the free claude.ai plan doesn't include it) | [Pro $20 ($17 a month billed yearly), Max from $100](https://claude.com/pricing) |
| Codex CLI | ChatGPT Free | Go $8, Plus $20, Pro from $100 |
| Copilot CLI | Copilot Free | Pro $10, Pro+ $39, Max $100 |
| Cursor CLI | Free, limited agent requests | Plus $8, Premium $30, Super $100, Ultra $200 |
| Amp | Hobby, with your own keys or subscriptions | Individual from $20 |
| Kiro | Free, 50 credits a month | Pro $20, Pro+ $40, Pro Max $100, Power $200 |
| Factory Droid | None listed | Pro $20, Plus $100, Max $200 |
| Antigravity CLI | No plan, weekly quota | Google AI Pro or Ultra |
| OpenCode, Aider, goose, Cline, Qwen Code, Gemini CLI | The program costs nothing; OpenCode adds free models | You pay the model provider (Gemini CLI: a paid key or Code Assist licence) |

## Using them together #

You don't have to pick one. In Shuriken, each chat picks its agent, and one project can hold a Claude Code chat, a Codex chat and an OpenCode chat side by side, each on its own branch in its own git worktree, so they never edit the same files under each other. Give two of them the same prompt, compare the diffs in Changes, and finish the one you like.

Each agent runs on the sources you add for it. When the account in use reaches your switch point, Shuriken moves the chat to another source you added for that same agent (we call it [hot swapping](https://shuriken.sh/features/source-switching)); a Claude Code chat never turns into a Codex chat. Add only accounts you own and are entitled to use, because providers' terms may not allow sharing a subscription sign-in. Add an MCP server once in [Global MCPs](https://shuriken.sh/features/global-mcps), pick its projects, and every chat in those projects gets it, whether it runs Claude Code, Codex, Gemini CLI, Copilot, Cursor or OpenCode.

Every agent is on every plan, Free included, and Free holds two sources: one Claude and one ChatGPT sign-in is enough to try Claude Code and Codex on the same task. [Download Shuriken](https://shuriken.sh/download) and add the agents you already pay for.

## Frequently asked questions

**What is the best free alternative to Claude Code?**

OpenCode calls itself 100% free to use and ships with free models. Copilot Free includes Copilot CLI, ChatGPT Free includes Codex, Antigravity gives Google users without a paid plan a weekly quota, and Kiro Free has 50 credits a month. Aider, goose and Cline are open source, but you pay the model provider unless you run a local model.

**Is there an open-source Claude Code alternative?**

Yes, several. Codex CLI, Gemini CLI, Aider, goose, Cline and Qwen Code are Apache-2.0, and OpenCode is MIT. Claude Code itself is proprietary.

**Which Claude Code alternatives run on Windows?**

Codex CLI, Copilot CLI, Cursor CLI, Antigravity CLI, Qwen Code, Aider, goose, Kiro and Factory Droid all document a Windows install. OpenCode installs natively too but recommends WSL. Claude Code itself runs on native Windows 10 (version 1809 or later) or in WSL.

**Can I use my Claude Pro or Max plan in another agent?**

Not by signing that agent in to your Claude account: Anthropic's Claude Code legal page says third-party developers may not offer Claude.ai login or route requests through Free, Pro or Max plan credentials. Use an Anthropic API key in OpenCode, Aider, Cline, goose or Factory Droid, or pick an agent whose own plan includes Claude models, such as Copilot, Cursor or Kiro.

**Is Gemini CLI still free?**

Not for personal accounts. Since 18 June 2026 Gemini CLI no longer serves the free Code Assist for individuals or Google AI Pro and Ultra. It runs on a Code Assist Standard or Enterprise licence, or a paid Gemini API key; Google points everyone else to Antigravity CLI.
