Claude Code vs Aider comes down to the model you want and how you want git handled. Aider is open source, works with almost any model including local ones and commits every edit; Claude Code is Anthropic's agent, comes with a Claude plan and leaves commits to you.

## Quick answer #

Claude Code vs Aider comes down to two questions: which model do you want, and how do you want git handled? Aider is open source, works with almost any model (local ones included), and commits every edit for you. Claude Code is Anthropic's own agent, comes with a Claude plan, and leaves commits to you. Both run in your terminal, and nothing stops you installing both.

## What Aider does well #

- Aider talks to Anthropic, OpenAI, Gemini, DeepSeek, xAI, OpenRouter and GitHub Copilot, and to local models through Ollama, LM Studio or any OpenAI-compatible address. A new open model can go in with --model the week it comes out, and that is the main reason to pick Aider.
- Git is its undo button. Aider [commits every change](https://aider.chat/docs/git.html) with a descriptive message, and before it edits a file you've changed, it commits your work first (--no-dirty-commits turns that off), so its edits stay separate from yours. /diff shows what changed since your last message, and /undo throws away the last AI change. Its commits carry "(aider)" in the author name. --no-auto-commits stops the commits if you prefer to make them yourself.
- Architect mode (aider --architect) sends each change through two models: one proposes it, and an "editor" model writes the file edits. That's two requests per change, so you can pair a strong reasoning model with one that edits files reliably. --editor-model overrides the editor Aider picks for your main model.
- A map of the whole repository tells the model where things are in a large project. The README says Aider works with 100+ programming languages.
- Apache-2.0 source: you can read what it sends to the model, pin a version and build it yourself.
- Voice input, images and web pages in the chat, lint and test runs after each change, and "AI comments": write an instruction as a comment in your editor and Aider picks it up.

## What Claude Code does well #

- It comes with your Claude plan. Claude's pricing page says Claude Code is ["included in all paid plans"](https://claude.com/pricing), so on Pro or Max there is no per-token bill to watch.
- Anthropic tunes the agent and the models together, and subagents, hooks, skills, plugins, MCP servers and memory files are first-class.
- /rewind, or Esc twice on an empty prompt, restores the code, the conversation or both. Claude Code takes a [checkpoint](https://code.claude.com/docs/en/checkpointing) at each prompt that starts a turn and keeps file snapshots for the 100 most recent. The same page has a section titled "Not a replacement for version control", and Claude commits only when you ask ("commit my changes with a descriptive message").
- Native Windows and WSL, macOS and several Linux distributions are supported, with signed apt, dnf and apk repositories and native installs that update themselves.
- For companies that want model traffic billed through their cloud, Claude Code runs on Amazon Bedrock, Google Cloud's Agent Platform (formerly Vertex AI) or Microsoft Foundry.

Shuriken runs Claude Code, Codex, Gemini CLI and 64 more agents side by side, with your own sign-ins.

## Where they differ in practice #

### Cost #

Aider is free, and your provider bills each request it sends, so a heavy week costs more than a light one. Claude Code on Pro or Max costs the same every month; what runs out is the [5-hour window and weekly cap](https://shuriken.sh/guides/claude-5-hour-limit-explained). On an API key, Claude Code is billed per token like Aider. Anthropic's cost page gives about $13 per developer per active day as the enterprise average, and under $30 for 90% of users. [Claude Code with an API key vs a subscription](https://shuriken.sh/guides/claude-code-api-vs-subscription) does the sums.

### Git habits #

You notice this one in the first ten minutes.

| After a session | Aider | Claude Code |
| --- | --- | --- |
| git log | One commit per change, Conventional Commits style, "(aider)" in the author | Unchanged until you ask for a commit |
| git status | Aider's edits already committed | A dirty working tree for you to review |
| Pre-commit hooks | Skipped (Aider commits with --no-verify unless you pass --git-commit-verify ) | Up to you: Claude commits when you ask |
| Undo a bad edit | /undo , or revert the commit | /rewind , or by hand |

Aider's way makes history noisy but every step reversible; Claude Code's keeps history clean. If you squash on merge, Aider's small commits don't matter much.

### Model freshness #

Aider's docs move slower than the models. On 22 October 2026 its [Anthropic page](https://aider.chat/docs/llms/anthropic.html) still named Claude 3.7 Sonnet as its default ("Aider uses Claude 3.7 Sonnet by default"), and its list of best models was from the same era. aider --list-models anthropic/ shows what your install knows about, and --model picks the one you want. Claude Code picks Anthropic's current models by default.

## Which should you choose? #

| If | Start with |
| --- | --- |
| You pay for Claude Pro or Max | Claude Code; it's included |
| You want local or open models, or to switch providers freely | Aider |
| You want every AI change as its own commit | Aider, out of the box |
| Your company requires open-source tools | Aider (or [OpenCode](https://shuriken.sh/compare/opencode), or Codex CLI) |
| You rely on subagents, hooks, skills or MCP servers | Claude Code |
| You can't decide | Both: give them the same task in the same repository and compare the diffs, which takes ten minutes |

## Pricing #

As published on 22 October 2026, in US dollars.

| | What you pay |
| --- | --- |
| Claude Code | Included in Claude Pro ($20 a month, or $17 a month billed yearly) and Max (from $100 a month), and in Team and Enterprise plans. Or pay per token with an API key |
| Aider | Free. You pay your model provider per token at their API prices, or nothing to a provider when the model runs on your own hardware |

## Using them together #

Both are among the 67 [coding agents](https://shuriken.sh/features/coding-agents) Shuriken runs, so one computer doesn't have to pick. A project can hold a Claude Code chat and an Aider chat side by side; for Aider, Shuriken runs Aider's own terminal program, aider, in the chat's folder. Each new chat gets its own branch in its own git worktree, so Aider's commits land on that chat's branch, not on yours, and the two agents don't edit the same files under each other. The exception is the project's Main chat, which works on your own branch for quick changes. That is how Shuriken runs [agents in parallel](https://shuriken.sh/features/parallel-agents).

When an Aider chat is done, Finish runs the checks listed in your project's shuriken.json and squash-merges its branch, so a dozen small "(aider)" commits arrive on your branch as one. If Aider isn't on a computer yet, Shuriken shows it as Not installed, with Aider's install command (python -m pip install aider-install && aider-install) and a link to its install page; once you've run the installer, Check again finds it. Claude Code gets the deepest integration, such as the Activity panel and switching accounts mid-task, and other agents get less. Shuriken itself is the harness around the agents and doesn't bill model usage, so Aider still runs on your own keys or local models.

## Frequently asked questions

**Is Aider better than Claude Code?**

Neither wins everywhere. Aider is open source under Apache-2.0 and works with almost any model, local ones included; Claude Code is Anthropic's own agent and comes with a Claude plan. Run the same task in both on your own code and compare the diffs.

**Can Aider use Claude models?**

Yes. Aider's docs list Anthropic among its providers, with the key in ANTHROPIC_API_KEY or the --anthropic-api-key switch. That is pay-as-you-go API billing; Aider's Anthropic page doesn't describe signing in with a Claude Pro or Max plan.

**Is Aider free?**

Aider itself is free and open source under Apache-2.0. You pay the model provider for the tokens it uses, or run a local model through Ollama or LM Studio on your own hardware.

**Does Claude Code commit to git automatically like Aider?**

No. Aider commits every edit it makes by default, until you pass --no-auto-commits. Claude Code edits your files, keeps its own checkpoints you can rewind with /rewind, and commits when you ask it to.

**Is there an open-source alternative to Claude Code?**

Aider is one of the oldest, and OpenCode and OpenAI's Codex CLI are open source too. They differ in which models they reach and how they handle git, so pick on those two.
