Both start at $100 a month: Claude Max gets you Claude Code with 5x or 20x Pro's usage per five-hour session plus a weekly limit, and ChatGPT Pro gets you Codex with, OpenAI says, no five-hour limit for now. Pick the one whose agent does better on your code and whose limit shape fits your day.

## Quick answer #

Claude Max vs ChatGPT Pro for coding comes down to two agents and two limit shapes at one starting price, $100 a month. Claude Max ($100 for 5x, $200 for 20x) includes Claude Code, with 5x or 20x Pro's usage per five-hour session and a weekly limit on top. ChatGPT Pro ($100, $200 or $500) includes Codex, and OpenAI's pricing page says "Pro plans currently have no five-hour limit". Choose by which agent does better on your code and which limit you run into first, or hold both.

## How the limits feel in practice #

The prices match at $100. The limits are built differently.

### Claude Max: two clocks #

Two clocks run on a Max plan. The session limit "will reset every five hours", in the words of Anthropic's Max page. The weekly limit "applies across all models" and resets at a fixed time each week that Anthropic assigns to your account, whenever you started using Claude; Settings › Usage on claude.ai shows the next reset, and /usage in Claude Code shows both bars.

Max 5x and Max 20x multiply the per-session allowance, by 5 and by 20 against Pro. The help page gives no multiple for the weekly limit. So a heavy morning can empty one session, and a heavy week can hit the weekly limit while each session still had room. The numbers behind both are in our guides to the [5-hour limit](https://shuriken.sh/guides/claude-5-hour-limit-explained) and [Max 5x vs 20x](https://shuriken.sh/guides/claude-max-vs-max-20x).

### ChatGPT Pro: no five-hour wall, for now #

OpenAI's pricing page, read again on 25 October 2026, estimates Plus in local messages per five-hour period, model by model, and adds "Weekly limits may also apply":

| Model | Plus, local messages per five hours |
| --- | --- |
| GPT-6.1 Sol | 15–160 |
| GPT-6 Sol | 15–150 |
| GPT-6 Astra | 5–45 |
| GPT-6 Luna | 350–3,000 |

The same page says "These estimates are not fixed message limits" and that "Pro plans currently have no five-hour limit". That "currently" is OpenAI's word, so look at the [pricing page](https://learn.chatgpt.com/docs/pricing) again before you plan a month around it. Our [Codex usage limits guide](https://shuriken.sh/guides/codex-usage-limits) follows the changes.

### Cloud work counts too #

Both companies also run agents in their cloud, and both bill that to the same plan. OpenAI's page says "Local messages and cloud chats share your plan's usage allowance", and that cloud tasks may use more of it than local messages. Anthropic says its cloud scheduled tasks draw down subscription usage like any other session.

## What each plan does well #

Claude Max suits you if Claude Code is already your main agent:

- one agent in the terminal, in Desktop's Code tab and in cloud scheduled tasks;
- 20 times Pro's room per session on Max 20x;
- monthly Claude API credits ($100 on 5x, $200 on 20x) for your own scripts.

ChatGPT Pro suits you if Codex does well on your code and your work comes in long runs:

- no five-hour wall, so a long afternoon session doesn't stop halfway;
- Ultrafast mode on the $500 plan, for when speed matters more than the price.

Neither is a coding plan as such. Both are general subscriptions, and each happens to include a very good coding agent.

Shuriken shows what every plan you hold has left in one figure, and what each turn costs as it runs.

## Which one for coding? #

We won't name a winner. Both agents change too often for a verdict to stay true, so we'd rather give you the test.

- Start with the $20 tier of each: Claude Pro includes Claude Code, ChatGPT Plus includes Codex. Give both agents the same three tasks from your real backlog.
- When one stops you, run /usage in it. Claude Code shows the session and weekly bars; Codex shows your account's token usage. A full session bar means the five-hour window is your limit, and a full weekly bar on a Thursday means it's the weekly one.
- Upgrade the one you reached for more, because that's the agent that suits your code, and buy the tier that removes the wall you actually hit.

## When the $20 tier is enough #

Claude Pro ($20 a month, or $17 billed yearly) includes Claude Code, and ChatGPT Plus ($20 a month) includes Codex. It is the same agent as on the $100 plans, with less room. Which wall you hit is the first question (the limits above), and two more decide whether that room is enough:

- How often do you hit the wall? On claude.ai, Settings › Usage shows where you are; Codex points you to its usage dashboard. If you run out on one or two days a week, the $20 tier plus some paid extra usage may cost less than a $100 plan. Claude sells usage credits for that, and ChatGPT sells credits.
- Do you run agents in parallel? Three agents at once use an allowance roughly three times as fast as one, and parallel work is usually what moves people off the $20 tier.

## What about API keys? #

An API key is the third way to pay for either agent: per token at API rates, with no five-hour window. Claude Code picks up a key from the ANTHROPIC_API_KEY environment variable once you approve it; Codex takes an OpenAI key after what its README calls additional setup. For steady, heavy use a subscription usually works out cheaper, and for occasional bursts a key can be the better deal. Max's monthly API credits are worth having if you already script against the API.

In Shuriken, API keys can be a [last resort](https://shuriken.sh/blog/api-keys-last-resort). The setting is "Switch to API keys", and it is off by default. Turned on, keys take chats only once every subscription you hold is out. "Spend cap per fallback" then stops each fallback run at $25 by default, counted across every key the run uses, not per key.

## Holding both #

A lot of heavy users end up with one of each. It costs more, but you get two agents and two separate sets of limits from two companies. When Claude's week is tight, Codex usually isn't, and the other way round.

The cost of two is the setup: two terminals, two MCP configs, two sets of sign-ins. Shuriken puts them in one app:

- One project, both agents. Each chat picks Claude Code or Codex and gets its own branch in its own git worktree. See [Claude Code vs Codex](https://shuriken.sh/compare/claude-code-vs-codex).
- One MCP list. Add a server once in [Global MCPs](https://shuriken.sh/features/global-mcps), and Claude Code and Codex chats both get it.
- Switching inside each provider. With two or more accounts at one provider, chats [move to the account with the most room](https://shuriken.sh/features/source-switching) when the one in use reaches "Switch at": 99% by default, adjustable from 50% to 100%. A chat only moves to another source for its own agent. A Claude Code chat never turns into a Codex chat, or the other way round; moving work between agents is your call, one chat at a time.

Only add accounts you own and are entitled to use. Providers' terms may not allow sharing a subscription sign-in.

Shuriken's Free plan holds two sources, which is exactly one Claude and one ChatGPT. If you pay for both, [download Shuriken](https://shuriken.sh/download) and put them in one place.

## Frequently asked questions

**Which is better for coding, Claude Max or ChatGPT Pro?**

It depends on which agent works better on your code and on how your limits run out. Claude Max gives you Claude Code with a five-hour window and a weekly limit. ChatGPT Pro gives you Codex and, for now, no five-hour limit. Try each agent on your own repository before you pay for the bigger tier.

**Can I have both and use them at the same time?**

Yes. They are separate subscriptions from separate companies, each with its own agent. In Shuriken, one project can hold Claude Code chats and Codex chats side by side, sharing one list of MCP servers.

**Is ChatGPT Pro unlimited for Codex?**

OpenAI's pricing page says Pro plans currently have no five-hour limit. It doesn't call them unlimited, and it sells extra credits for when you reach a limit.

**Do Claude Max and ChatGPT Pro cost the same?**

Both start at $100 a month. Claude Max has a $100 tier (5x Pro) and a $200 tier (20x Pro). ChatGPT Pro has plans at $100, $200 or $500 a month. Prices are in US dollars and can differ by country and app store.

**Does Shuriken include either subscription?**

No. Shuriken never bills model usage. Your agents run on the plans and API keys you already have, and your provider bills you directly.
