# Shuriken and OpenCode: use them together

> OpenCode is an open-source coding agent with its own desktop app. Shuriken is a harness that runs it next to Claude Code and Codex, on your machines.

OpenCode is an open-source coding agent with its own desktop app, so for a GUI for OpenCode alone, use that. Shuriken runs OpenCode as a chat beside Claude Code, Codex and other agents, gives each chat its own git worktree, and lets you follow all of them from your phone.

We make Shuriken. We tried to be fair; corrections welcome at office@shuriken.sh.

## Quick answer #

OpenCode is an open-source coding agent, and it already has its own desktop app. Shuriken is a harness: it runs OpenCode as a chat next to Claude Code, Codex and 64 other agents, gives each chat its own git worktree, and lets you follow all of them from your phone. Want a GUI for OpenCode alone? Use OpenCode's app. Want OpenCode beside your other agents? Use both.

## At a glance #

OpenCode's column is from [opencode.ai](https://opencode.ai/), read on 2026-10-22; the subscriptions row was read again on 2026-10-24. Their numbers are their own.

| | OpenCode | Shuriken |
| --- | --- | --- |
| What it is | "The open source AI coding agent" | A harness that runs coding agents, OpenCode included |
| Where you use it | Terminal, desktop app, web, IDE extension | Desktop app on macOS, Windows and Linux; headless servers; a web app for phones |
| Models | "75+ LLM providers through Models.dev, including local models" | Whatever each agent supports, on the sources (accounts and keys) you add |
| Subscriptions | Says you can use ChatGPT Plus/Pro or GitHub Copilot | Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot, Cursor and more, several accounts per provider, with automatic switching |
| Several agents at once | "Start multiple agents in parallel on the same project" | Any mix of 67 agents, no cap, each chat on its own branch if you want |
| Other agents in the same window | No, it is the agent | Claude Code, Codex, Gemini CLI, Aider, Amp and 60+ more |
| Phone | A web app; no phone app mentioned | The web app at app.shuriken.sh. Native iOS and Android apps planned for November 2026 |

## What OpenCode does well #

It's open and it's popular. OpenCode is MIT-licensed. Its site says it has over 220,000 GitHub stars and is "used and trusted by over 16M developers every month". We haven't checked those numbers, but nobody gets there by accident.

It talks to almost any model. Through Models.dev it reaches 75+ providers, and you can connect local models. If you like switching between Claude, GPT, open-weight models and whatever came out this week, OpenCode makes that easy. OpenCode Zen adds a handpicked set of models the OpenCode team has tested.

It knows your code. It "automatically loads the right LSPs for the LLM", so the model gets real type and symbol information, not just text.

It's everywhere. Terminal UI, desktop app, web, IDE extension. And it can run several agents in parallel on one project, and share a link to any session.

If you only ever use OpenCode, you may not need anything else.

Shuriken runs Claude Code, Codex, Gemini CLI and 64 more agents side by side, with your own sign-ins.

## Where Shuriken is different #

### OpenCode is one of 67 #

If you use Claude Code for one thing, Codex for another and OpenCode for a third, often on the same repo, Shuriken puts them in one place. Each chat picks its agent, gets its own branch in its own worktree, and runs on its own. You can start an OpenCode chat, a Claude Code chat and a Codex chat on the same project and compare what they come back with. For the Claude-and-Codex version of this, see [Claude Code vs Codex](https://shuriken.sh/compare/claude-code-vs-codex). How OpenCode itself compares with Claude Code, including what Anthropic's terms say about Claude plans in other tools, is in [OpenCode vs Claude Code](https://shuriken.sh/compare/opencode-vs-claude-code).

Depth varies by agent. Claude Code gives Shuriken the most detail (subagents in Activity, mid-task account switching). OpenCode runs as a full chat, and you can open any OpenCode chat in OpenCode's own terminal UI when you want its interface back.

### The accounts around it #

Shuriken's [source switching](https://shuriken.sh/features/source-switching) is built for people with several subscriptions. When the Claude or ChatGPT account in use runs low, your Claude Code and Codex chats move to another account you own, by themselves, on every device. Session limits start idle Claude accounts' 5-hour windows with one tiny background request each, so limits come back early. Only add accounts you own and are entitled to use.

OpenCode 1 itself keeps one login per provider, so [two OpenCode accounts side by side](https://shuriken.sh/guides/opencode-multiple-accounts) means an XDG_DATA_HOME each. A Claude Pro or Max sign-in no longer works in OpenCode at all ([what Anthropic's terms allow in other tools](https://shuriken.sh/guides/claude-subscription-in-other-tools)).

### Your machines, your phone #

Agents run on your computers and servers. Our cloud links your devices and relays end-to-end encrypted messages; it runs no agents and stores no code. Every chat, OpenCode's included, shows up in the web app on your phone, with the queue, Changes and voice. More on [the phone](https://shuriken.sh/features/phone).

### Keep it running while you're away #

An agent on your laptop stops when your laptop sleeps. Shuriken has three answers. [Cocaine mode](https://shuriken.sh/blog/cocaine-mode-yes-really) keeps a Mac running with the lid closed; with the lid open, each device's Keep awake setting can be While working, which holds the computer awake only while an agent, the queue or a workflow runs. The background service keeps agents running after you close the app window. And a server you add runs Shuriken headless, as a service that restarts on its own.

If one computer is busy, run the chat on another of yours: it gets the repo there and the same chat carries on.

### The rest of the harness #

- The queue: type while the agent works; messages run in order.
- Finish: one click runs your checks, then squash-merges or opens a pull request.
- Browser with Design mode: click an element on your running app and describe what to change.
- Open anywhere: open a chat's worktree in VS Code, Zed, a JetBrains IDE, Warp or any of 44 editors, terminals and file managers.

## Pricing #

OpenCode is free and MIT-licensed; you pay your model providers. Shuriken has a Free plan (two sources, two linked devices, every agent, no card) and Pro at €49 a month or €490 a year (2 months free), VAT included for EU consumers. Shuriken never bills model usage either.

## Using them together #

- Check OpenCode is installed on the computer that will run it. Shuriken looks for the opencode command; if it's missing, press Install next to OpenCode in your agents list.
- Open your project in Shuriken and start a new chat. Pick OpenCode as the agent. It gets its own branch and worktree.
- Set up OpenCode's models the way you normally do. OpenCode has its own provider settings, local models included.
- Start a Claude Code or Codex chat next to it if you want a second opinion on the same task.
- Need OpenCode's own interface? Open the chat in its terminal UI from the chat tab.
- Done? Use Finish to merge, or open the worktree in your editor.

A split that works well: give Claude Code the feature, and give OpenCode, pointed at a different model, the job of writing tests for the same change in its own chat. Each works on its own branch, so neither trips over the other, and you merge what's good with Finish. When one Claude account runs low halfway through, the Claude Code chat moves to your next account by itself; the OpenCode chat keeps going on whatever OpenCode is set up to use.

Shuriken's [global MCPs](https://shuriken.sh/features/global-mcps) reach OpenCode chats too: Shuriken hands the same servers to OpenCode when a chat starts, so you sign in to GitHub or Linear once for every agent. Servers you set up in OpenCode's own config still work as before.

On local models: Shuriken 5.1 added Ollama, LM Studio and any Anthropic- or OpenAI-compatible address as a source, so other agents can use them too.

If you run OpenCode next to other agents, [download Shuriken](https://shuriken.sh/download) and give them a branch each.

## Frequently asked questions

**Does OpenCode have a GUI?**

Yes. OpenCode's own site says it's available as a terminal interface, a desktop app, a web app and an IDE extension. If you only use OpenCode, its desktop app is the first thing to try.

**Is OpenCode a competitor to Shuriken?**

Not really. OpenCode is an agent: it reads your code, calls a model and makes changes. Shuriken is a harness that runs agents, OpenCode among them, and handles the accounts, devices and worktrees around them.

**Can OpenCode use local models?**

Yes. OpenCode says it supports 75+ providers through Models.dev, local models included. Since Shuriken 5.1, Ollama, LM Studio and any Anthropic- or OpenAI-compatible address can be a source for other agents too.

**Do I need to install OpenCode separately?**

No. Shuriken looks for the opencode command on each computer. If it's missing, OpenCode shows as Not installed with an Install button, and Shuriken installs it from OpenCode's npm package.

**Does OpenCode in Shuriken cost extra?**

No. Every agent is in every Shuriken plan, Free included. OpenCode itself is free and open source; you pay your model provider as usual.
