Short answer: Pro ($20 a month, or $17 billed yearly) fits a few focused Claude Code sessions a week. Max gives five times ($100) or twenty times ($200) Pro's usage per session. If you hit the 5-hour limit most days, or run agents in parallel, Max is the plan built for you. Below that, Pro is plenty.

The price jump from $20 to $100 looks steep. Per unit of usage, it isn't: Max 5x costs the same per session-allowance as Pro, and Max 20x costs half. The real question is how much you use.

## The plans side by side #

From [claude.com/pricing](https://claude.com/pricing) and Anthropic's [Max plan page](https://support.claude.com/en/articles/11049741-what-is-the-max-plan), read on 2026-10-22, in US dollars:

| | Pro | Max 5x | Max 20x |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Price | $20 a month, or $17 a month billed yearly | $100 a month | $200 a month |
| Usage per 5-hour session | Baseline | 5x Pro | 20x Pro |
| Weekly limit | Yes | Yes, across all models | Yes, across all models |
| Claude Code | Included | Included | Included |
| Price per "Pro's worth" of usage | $20 | $20 | $10 |

The last row is our arithmetic from Anthropic's own multiples, not an Anthropic figure. It's per-session usage: Anthropic doesn't publish how the weekly limits compare.

### A rough rule of thumb #

- Pro: evenings and weekends, one chat at a time, mostly Sonnet.
- Max 5x: Claude Code is your main tool at work, with one or two chats going.
- Max 20x: several agents in parallel most of the day, or long Opus sessions.

That's our rule of thumb, not Anthropic's. A week of your own numbers beats it, and we show how to get them below.

## What Pro gives you for Claude Code #

Pro includes Claude Code in your terminal and supported IDEs under the same subscription as Claude on the web, desktop and phone. Anthropic's [help page](https://support.claude.com/en/articles/11145838-use-claude-code-with-your-pro-or-max-plan) is clear on the catch: "Both Pro and Max plans have a five-hour session limit and a weekly limit", and those limits are shared across Claude and Claude Code. An afternoon of long chats on claude.ai leaves less for the terminal.

On models: the model table on Anthropic's pricing page lists Opus as available on Pro. Which model you run changes how far the window reaches: Anthropic lists model choice next to conversation length and tool use among the things that decide how many messages fit ([Anthropic](https://support.claude.com/en/articles/9797557-usage-limit-best-practices)).

To see where you stand, run /status or /usage in Claude Code. On a paid plan, /usage also breaks down what's eating your allowance (skills, subagents, MCP servers) and suggests fixes.

## Signs you've outgrown Pro #

- The 5-hour limit is a daily event. You know the message: "Usage limit reached · wrapping up". Claude Code may keep going briefly to finish the step in progress, and then you wait. Once a day is a rhythm; three times a day is a wall. Our [5-hour limit guide](https://shuriken.sh/guides/claude-5-hour-limit-explained) explains how the window works.
- You run agents in parallel. Two or three chats at once all draw from the same window. Pro wasn't sized for that.
- Your sessions run long. Anthropic's cost docs explain that Claude Code re-sends the whole conversation with every request, so a session open all day costs more per message than a fresh one.
- You're buying usage credits every week. If the top-ups add up to more than the gap to Max, the maths has already decided.

### Measure a week before you decide #

Guessing from one bad afternoon is how people pay $100 for a problem they had once. A week of evidence is free:

- Count the walls. Note each time you see the 5-hour limit message, and what time it was. Twice a week is fine on Pro; twice a day isn't.
- Check which limit it was. A 5-hour wall and a weekly wall have different fixes. If the weekly limit runs out on Thursday, a bigger session window won't save Friday. Our [weekly limit guide](https://shuriken.sh/guides/claude-weekly-limit-explained) covers that one.
- Read the breakdown. In /usage, press w for the last seven days. It shows whether one MCP server or a looping task is a big share of your usage.
- Price it. Our [guide to checking Claude Code usage](https://shuriken.sh/guides/check-claude-code-usage) shows where every number lives, and the [API key vs subscription guide](https://shuriken.sh/guides/claude-code-api-vs-subscription) turns a week of tokens into dollars.

If the week says you hit the 5-hour window most days and the weekly limit rarely, Max 5x is the obvious step. If it says the weekly limit is what stops you, read on before picking a tier.

## Max 5x or Max 20x? #

Max 5x is the natural step from Pro: five times the per-session usage for five times the price. Max 20x doubles the price again for four times more per session. Whether that's worth it depends on whether the 5-hour window or the weekly limit is what stops you, and Anthropic doesn't publish a weekly multiplier. Our [Max 5x vs 20x guide](https://shuriken.sh/guides/claude-max-vs-max-20x) digs into exactly that.

## Upgrading mid-month #

You don't have to wait for your renewal. Anthropic's [billing help](https://support.claude.com/en/articles/16607638-understanding-your-pro-or-max-plan-invoices) says an upgrade from Pro to Max resets your billing cycle and sends an immediate invoice for a full cycle of Max, "less a prorated amount for value remaining in your old plan". If the leftover value is bigger than the new charge, the rest stays as credit on your account. Per Anthropic's [Max plan page](https://support.claude.com/en/articles/11049741-what-is-the-max-plan), Max is a monthly subscription only.

There's also a middle path: stay on Pro and turn on usage credits, paying as you go past the limit with a monthly spend cap. Fine for the occasional heavy week, expensive as a habit. Our [API key vs subscription guide](https://shuriken.sh/guides/claude-code-api-vs-subscription) compares the per-token side.

## Where Shuriken fits #

Shuriken doesn't change Anthropic's limits. It helps you use the ones you have:

- Session limits. Claude's 5-hour window starts the first time an account is used. When an account's window isn't running, Shuriken sends it one tiny request in the background, once per window, so its window starts and its limit comes back early. With two accounts, the second one's clock runs while you work on the first. See [session limits](https://shuriken.sh/features/session-clock).
- Switching. When the account in use reaches your switch point (99% by default) or a limit, chats move to the account with the most room. A Claude Code chat moves on its next request, subagents and all.
- A capped fallback. Add an API key and turn on Switch to API keys (it's off by default). The key then takes chats only once every subscription is out, and a spend cap per fallback run, $25 unless you change it, stops the run.

It works on Pro just as well as Max, and Shuriken never bills model usage. If you're on the fence between plans, [download Shuriken](https://shuriken.sh/download), watch your real usage for a week, and let the numbers pick.

## Frequently asked questions

**Is Claude Pro enough for Claude Code?**

For a few focused sessions a week, often yes. If you hit the 5-hour limit most days, or run more than one agent at a time, Pro will feel small and Max is the plan built for that.

**Can I use Opus in Claude Code on Pro?**

On 2026-10-22, the model table on claude.com/pricing listed Opus as available on Pro. Opus costs twice what Sonnet does per token on the API, and Anthropic suggests Sonnet for most coding and Opus for complex reasoning.

**Can I upgrade from Pro to Max in the middle of the month?**

Yes. Anthropic's billing help says an upgrade resets your billing cycle and invoices you right away for a full cycle of Max, less a prorated amount for what's left of your Pro plan.

**Should I pick Max 5x or Max 20x?**

Max 5x gives five times Pro's per-session usage for $100 a month, Max 20x gives twenty times for $200. Our Max 5x vs 20x guide covers which limit you're really hitting before you pay double.

**Do Claude chat and Claude Code share the same limits?**

Yes. Anthropic says the 5-hour and weekly limits are shared across Claude and Claude Code, so a long chat on claude.ai uses the same allowance as your coding sessions.
