Claude's usage limits changed at least six times in 2026, while the plan prices stayed put. In short: an off-peak bonus and tighter peak hours in March, Claude Code's 5-hour limits doubled on 6 May, a +50% weekly boost from 13 May to 13 September, weekly limits settled 25% above the old level on 14 September, and 5-hour limits rose again on 22 September.

This page lists each change with its date, who it hit and the source. We read every source on 22 October 2026 and will add rows as Anthropic changes things. How each limit works is in our guides to the [5-hour limit](https://shuriken.sh/guides/claude-5-hour-limit-explained) and the [weekly limit](https://shuriken.sh/guides/claude-weekly-limit-explained); this page is only the history.

The chart uses Anthropic's own percentages on an index, because Anthropic doesn't publish limits as message or token counts. Your real allowance depends on your plan and how you work.

## March: off-peak bonus, then tighter peak hours #

On 14 March, Claude's account announced: "We're doubling usage outside our peak hours for the next two weeks" ([Claude on X](https://x.com/claudeai/status/2032911276226257206)). Engadget reported the window as 13 to 27 March, outside weekday hours between 8 AM and 2 PM ET, for Free, Pro, Max and Team, with Enterprise left out ([Engadget](https://www.engadget.com/ai/anthropic-is-doubling-claudes-usage-limits-during-off-peak-hours-for-the-next-two-weeks-163645928.html)).

On 26 March came the other half. Thariq Shihipar of Anthropic wrote: "To manage growing demand for Claude we're adjusting our 5 hour session limits for free/Pro/Max subs during peak hours", and "Your weekly limits remain unchanged" ([X](https://x.com/trq212/status/2037254607001559305)). According to The Register, he estimated that about 7% of users would hit session limits they wouldn't have before. The Register gave the peak window as 05:00 to 11:00 PT ([The Register](https://www.theregister.com/software/2026/03/26/anthropic-tweaks-claude-usage-limits-to-manage-capacity/5225406)).

## May: 5-hour limits doubled, then a weekly boost #

On 6 May, Anthropic announced it was "doubling Claude Code's five-hour rate limits" for Pro, Max, Team and seat-based Enterprise plans, and "removing the peak hours limit reduction on Claude Code" for Pro and Max ([Anthropic](https://www.anthropic.com/news/higher-limits-spacex)). It tied the change to a compute deal with SpaceX. The post didn't mention weekly limits.

A week later the weekly side moved too. Anthropic's help page for the promotion says weekly usage in Claude Code was 50% higher, valid "from May 13, 2026 through September 13, 2026 at 11:59 PM PT", for Pro, Max and Team plans and legacy seat-based Enterprise users; Free plans and consumption-based Enterprise seats were left out ([Claude Help Center](https://support.claude.com/en/articles/15910845-claude-code-may-august-2026-weekly-limits-promotion)).

It didn't start out running that long. On 13 July, Help Net Security reported an extension to 19 July ([Help Net Security](https://www.helpnetsecurity.com/2026/07/13/claude-code-weekly-limits-promotion-extended/)). The help page's own title still says "May–August", from a later end date; the final one was 13 September.

## September: the 25% that read as a cut #

On 29 August, Anthropic's developer account announced: "Starting September 14, we're permanently raising standard weekly limits in Claude Code by 25%" for Pro, Max, Team and seat-based Enterprise, with the 50% boost in place until then ([Claude Devs on X](https://x.com/ClaudeDevs/status/2093742321473065266)). People did the sum straight away. A clarification followed: "Compared to today, this works out to a 17% reduction in weekly limits on Claude Code" ([BleepingComputer](https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/news/artificial-intelligence/anthropic-is-cutting-claude-codes-current-weekly-limits-by-17-percent/)).

Both numbers are right. On an index of 100 before May, the summer level was 150 and the new level is 125: 25% above the old standard, about 17% below the boost. If your September felt tighter than your August, that's why.

## 22 September: higher 5-hour limits and a reset you can save #

With Claude Opus 5.5, Anthropic said "we're increasing five-hour usage limits on Pro, Max, Team, and seat-based Enterprise plans", and that subscribers get "a rate limit reset, which you can now save and use whenever you choose" ([Anthropic](https://www.anthropic.com/claude-opus-5-5)). It gave no new figures.

The help page on resets says they are "given occasionally to eligible plans", set your 5-hour or weekly limit back to full when you use one (the offer says which), and expire "on the day and time listed on the offer". You use one in Settings › Usage on the web or in Claude Desktop; the button isn't in Claude Code in the terminal, though the reset covers Claude Code too because limits are shared ([Claude Help Center](https://support.claude.com/en/articles/17007452-what-is-a-limit-reset)).

## How to see a change in your own numbers #

Announcements give percentages. What you feel is how fast your bars fill.

- Claude Code: /usage shows your plan's bars and reset times. Our guide on [checking Claude Code usage](https://shuriken.sh/guides/check-claude-code-usage) covers status lines and the rest.
- claude.ai: Settings › Usage shows the current session and the week.

Compare a normal week before and after a change, with similar work. A single heavy day tells you little.

## How Shuriken shows it #

In Shuriken, every account's 5-hour and weekly use sits side by side, and the top bar shows how much is left this week across your accounts ([Usage at a glance](https://shuriken.sh/features/fuel)). When Anthropic moves a limit, it shows up there as a bar that fills faster or slower than last week.

Switching works in percentages, so it follows a limit change by itself: when the account in use reaches your switch point (99% by default) or Claude reports a limit, your chats move to another of your accounts with room. Nothing to retune when the numbers behind the bar change. [Download Shuriken](https://shuriken.sh/download).

## Frequently asked questions

**Did Anthropic cut Claude Code's weekly limits in September 2026?**

Both readings are true. From 14 September 2026 weekly limits are 25% above where they were before May, but 50% had been the level all summer, so Anthropic itself said it works out to a 17% reduction compared with the boost.

**Are Claude Code's 5-hour limits still doubled?**

As far as we can tell, yes. Anthropic hasn't announced an end to the 6 May 2026 doubling for Pro, Max, Team and seat-based Enterprise, and on 22 September it said it was raising 5-hour limits again.

**Do peak hours still use up Claude limits faster?**

Not in Claude Code on Pro and Max: Anthropic removed the peak-hours limit reduction there on 6 May 2026. Its announcement didn't say the same for chat on claude.ai.

**What is a Claude limit reset?**

A reset Anthropic hands out now and then that sets your 5-hour or weekly limit back to full, depending on the offer, when you choose to use it. You use it in Settings › Usage on the web or in Claude Desktop, not in the terminal, and it expires on the date shown.
