Claude Code vs Claude chat for coding: when to use which

Use Claude chat to think through code you paste, and Claude Code when the change lives in a repository: it reads your files, edits them, runs your tests and commits. Both come from Anthropic, run the same models and draw from the same plan limits.

Quick answer#

For Claude Code vs Claude chat for coding, the split is where the code lives. Claude chat (the Claude app on the web, desktop or phone) sees what you paste or attach, which suits a stack trace to explain, two designs to compare or one function to write. Claude Code runs inside your repository, where it reads your files, edits them, runs your tests and commits. Both are Anthropic's, run the same models and draw from the same plan limits.

What Claude chat does well#

  • Design questions such as "should this be a queue or a cron job?" stay in the conversation, and chat edits none of your files while you decide.
  • Paste a stack trace, a regex or a SQL query and ask what it does. No project needs to be open.
  • A shell one-liner, a function to drop in or a quick prototype lands in an artifact, the window beside the chat for "anything Claude makes for you that you'd put in front of someone". Artifacts are on every plan, Free included.
  • The GitHub integration adds files you pick from a repo to a chat or a project, and Sync pulls them again from the branch. That answers "how does this library do X?" without running anything.
  • On a phone, chat is the Claude app. A terminal agent on a phone takes more setup.

What Claude Code does well#

  • Changes across many files. It finds the files itself, edits them and shows you the diff. Whether it asks before each edit depends on the permission mode, and Shift+Tab switches the mode mid-session.
  • Checking its own work: it runs your tests, your build and your linter, then fixes what fails. Anthropic's best practices call this the biggest lever: "Give Claude a check it can run … It's the difference between a session you watch and one you walk away from".
  • CLAUDE.md, the project memory file, holds your commands and conventions so you stop repeating them, and /init writes a starter one from your project's structure.
  • Git by request: "commit my changes with a descriptive message" and "create a pr" are normal prompts.
  • claude -p "query" runs one request and exits, which is how Claude Code goes into scripts and CI; Anthropic's example is cat error.log | claude -p "explain this error". Hooks, skills and subagents automate the rest.

Where they differ in practice#

Context: you carry it, or it fetches it#

Chat answers from what you gave it. If the bug sits in a file you didn't paste, it guesses. Claude Code opens the file, and if you name one in the prompt with @ (Anthropic's example is @src/middleware/rateLimiter.ts), it reads that file before answering. That reading is its biggest advantage and the reason it draws more from your plan.

Cost of a question#

The same question costs more in Claude Code, because the agent reads files and runs commands before it answers, and each file it reads becomes context. Asked "what does this regex do?", chat works from the regex alone and is the cheaper tool. Where the rest of Claude Code's tokens go is broken down in why Claude Code burns tokens.

Copy and paste#

Chat's answer ends up in your clipboard and you paste it in. For one function that's fine. Across eight files, pasting is where mistakes creep in, and nothing runs the tests afterwards. Claude Code edits the eight files in place, shows the diff, and runs the check you named, so once a change spreads past one file, move it there.

Claude Code or Claude chat for coding: which to use?#

If Use
You're deciding what to build, not building it Chat
You want an explanation of code you can paste Chat
The answer is one self-contained piece (a regex, a query, a small script) Chat
The change touches more than one file Claude Code
"Done" means the tests pass Claude Code, because it can run them
You're on the Free plan Chat; Claude Code needs a paid plan or a Console account

Pricing and limits#

As of 22 October 2026, in US dollars, from Anthropic's pricing page.

Plan Price Chat Claude Code
Free $0 Yes No
Pro $20 a month, or $17 a month billed yearly Yes Yes
Max From $100 a month Yes, with more usage Yes, with more usage

The limits are one pool. The pricing page: "Your activity across Claude on web, desktop, mobile, and Claude Code all draws from the same pool." The Claude Help Center article on Claude Code with Pro or Max says "all activity in both tools counts against the same limits". Every plan resets on a rolling five-hour window and paid plans add weekly limits on top (how the 5-hour window works). An afternoon of Claude Code leaves less chat in that five-hour window, and a long chat leaves less for Claude Code.

Using them together#

Talk the design through in chat until it fits in a few lines. Then open a terminal in the project, run claude, and paste those lines as the goal, with the files that matter added by @ and the command that proves it's done. The beginner's guide covers the first hour with Claude Code, from install to the first change.

Shuriken is on the Claude Code side of this page. It runs Claude Code, and 66 other coding agents, on your own computers, and it doesn't replace the Claude app. Because chat and Claude Code share one pool, what helps here is the numbers: Shuriken shows each account's 5-hour and weekly use side by side (usage at a glance), so before a long session you can see whether the window has room for it. If you also use the VS Code extension, Claude Code's VS Code extension vs the CLI compares the two.

To keep an eye on that shared pool while you code, download Shuriken.

Frequently asked questions

Is Claude Code better than Claude chat for coding?

For changing code in a repository, yes: it reads your files, edits them and runs your tests. For explaining, designing and quick snippets, chat is often faster and uses less of your limit.

Do Claude chat and Claude Code share usage limits?

Yes, one pool for both. Claude's pricing page says "Your activity across Claude on web, desktop, mobile, and Claude Code all draws from the same pool." It resets on a rolling five-hour window, with weekly limits on top for paid plans.

Can Claude chat see my GitHub repository?

Only the files you pick from a repository, through the GitHub integration, synced from one branch. Chat reads them as context. It can't commit, run your tests or open pull requests, and Anthropic's help page says commit history and PRs aren't retrieved.

Is Claude Code included in the free plan?

No. As of 22 October 2026, Anthropic's pricing page includes Claude Code in Pro and Max, not in Free. Chat works on every plan.
