Shuriken vs Claude Code Desktop (2026)

Claude Code Desktop is Anthropic's official app, included with your Claude plan, and hard to beat if you use one Claude account and only Claude Code. Shuriken runs the same Claude Code CLI and adds several accounts that switch by themselves, other agents such as Codex and Gemini CLI, and your own servers.

Quick answer#

Anthropic's Claude Code Desktop is official, included with your Claude plan, and made by the team that builds Claude Code. If you use one Claude account and only Claude Code, it's hard to beat. Shuriken runs the same Claude Code CLI on your machines and adds what Anthropic's app doesn't aim to: several accounts that switch by themselves, Codex, Gemini CLI and 64 more agents, and your own servers.

Which one fits comes down to how many accounts and agents you run.

What Claude Code Desktop does well#

Anthropic builds both Claude Code and the desktop app, so a new Claude Code feature reaches it with no third-party layer in between, and no update can break a wrapper you depend on. It comes with every Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise plan, and with the Claude API, so there is no second subscription.

The 14 April 2026 redesign turned it into a workspace. It added:

  • a sidebar with every active and recent session, filtered by status, project or environment
  • side chats (⌘ + ;) that read the main thread without adding to it
  • an integrated terminal
  • a preview pane for HTML, PDFs and local servers
  • panes you drag and drop

A session can run in four places: on your computer, on Anthropic-managed cloud infrastructure (it keeps going after you close the app), over SSH on your own servers, or inside WSL on Windows. The Linux build is in beta.

Remote Control is very good. Start a session at your desk and continue it from the Claude app on iOS or Android, or from claude.ai/code. The session keeps running on your machine, with your files, MCP servers and tools, and subagent progress stays in sync across devices. It needs a Pro, Max, Team or Enterprise plan and doesn't work with API keys (docs).

On Pro and Max you can also send Dispatch a task from your phone and it can start a Code session for you, with a push when it finishes or needs you. The desktop app also runs scheduled tasks (docs).

Where Shuriken is different#

Several Claude accounts, switched for you#

Some heavy users run two Claude accounts: a personal Max plan and a work seat, for example. Anthropic's app works with the one account you signed in with, and when it hits its limit you either wait for the reset or sign out and sign in with the other.

In Shuriken you add each account you own as a source. When the one in use reaches your switch point (99% by default, anywhere from 50% to 100%) or Anthropic reports a limit, your chats move to the account with the most room. A Claude Code chat moves on its next request, with its subagents and workflows, so a long task doesn't stop. A "Switched to …" card in the chat says which account took over. See source switching.

Only add accounts you own and are entitled to use. Anthropic's Consumer Terms don't let you share your login with anyone else, and Shuriken never asks you to.

Session limits#

A Claude 5-hour window starts with the first message on that account. With Start unused session limits on (Sources › Switch settings), Shuriken sends an account whose window isn't running one tiny background request, so its window starts and its limit comes back sooner. That is one request per window, it never appears in a chat, and your chats stay on the account they're on (how session limits work).

More than Claude#

Shuriken runs 67 coding agents: Codex, Gemini CLI, GitHub Copilot, Cursor, OpenCode, Amp, goose, Aider and more, each with the sign-ins you already have. Your ChatGPT and Gemini accounts switch the same way, and global MCPs give every agent the same servers with one sign-in each.

The queue#

Type while the agent works. Messages wait their turn, can repeat and carry attachments, and you can edit, reorder or remove a row.

Your own servers#

Add a Linux, macOS or Windows server from Settings › Devices. The installer sets up the agent CLIs and GitHub sign-in, runs as a service and updates itself only to signed releases. Run any chat on another of your computers with Run on…: that computer gets the repo if it needs to, and the same chat carries on there.

Everything else around the agent#

Activity shows subagents, workflows and background commands live. The built-in browser has Design mode: click an element and describe the change. Voice turns your speech into text on your own computer by default, or live with a speech provider on your own key. And on a Mac, Cocaine mode keeps the machine running with the lid closed.

When to stay with Anthropic's app#

Stay with it if you have one Claude account, run only Claude Code, and use cloud sessions or Dispatch; it is free with your plan. Shuriken is worth adding in three cases: one account hits its limit while another sits idle, Codex or Gemini CLI joins the project, or the work belongs on a server you own.

Pricing#

Price
Claude Code Desktop Nothing beyond your Claude plan
Shuriken Free €0, no card, not a trial: two sources, two linked devices, every agent and switching
Shuriken Pro €49 a month or €490 a year (2 months free), VAT included for EU consumers: unlimited sources and devices

Shuriken never bills model usage. Your agents run on your own Claude plans and keys (pricing has the plan details).

With one Claude account, Shuriken Free already covers it and Anthropic's app costs nothing extra, so the choice is about the extras and not about paying for the agent.

Using them together#

They don't fight. Both drive Claude Code against the same project folder, and Anthropic's docs say the desktop app reads the same settings files as the CLI. One sensible split:

  • Anthropic's app for Remote Control, cloud sessions and Dispatch on your main account.
  • Shuriken for the long-running work: several accounts with switching, other agents next to Claude Code, servers and the queue.

Frequently asked questions

Is it the real Claude Code inside Shuriken?

Yes. Shuriken runs the Claude Code CLI on your own computer or server, with your own Claude sign-in. Any chat can also be opened in Claude Code's own terminal interface.

Claude Code Desktop or the CLI: which should I use?

Both run the same agent, and Anthropic's docs say the desktop app reads the same settings files as the CLI. The desktop app adds the session sidebar, the preview pane and panes you can drag; the CLI suits a terminal and scripts run with claude -p.

Can I control Claude Code from my phone without Shuriken?

Yes. Remote Control connects the Claude app for iOS and Android, or claude.ai/code, to a session running on your machine. It needs a Pro, Max, Team or Enterprise plan and doesn't work with API keys.

Does Claude Code Desktop support several Claude accounts?

Its docs say to sign in and don't cover several accounts or switching at a limit (read 2026-10-22). Shuriken switches between the accounts you own and add as sources.

Do I pay twice?

Claude Code Desktop is included with your Claude plan. Shuriken runs on that same plan; its Free plan costs nothing, and Pro (€49 a month) is for people with many accounts or devices.
