Quick answer#

GitHub Copilot is strongest inside your editor. Claude Code is strongest as an agent you hand whole tasks to. Copilot Pro is $10 a month for unlimited completions, chat, agent mode and a cloud agent that turns issues into pull requests, with 1,500 AI credits a month for everything except completions and next edit suggestions. Claude Code runs in the terminal or your editor on a Claude plan from $20 a month, with 5-hour and weekly limits. Pick Copilot if you mostly write code yourself and want help as you type, and Claude Code if you mostly delegate. The two also run side by side.

How the money works#

Copilot: a monthly credit pool#

GitHub's individual plans now come with AI credits. Every chat, agent step or cloud agent session uses tokens; each token is priced by the model that served it, and the total is converted to credits at one cent each. Each plan's monthly credits are base credits, which match the price, plus a flex allotment that GitHub says adapts as model prices and efficiency change:

Plan Price Base Flex Total a month
Pro $10 1,000 500 1,500
Pro+ $39 3,900 3,100 7,000
Max $100 10,000 10,000 20,000

Base credits go first. Unused credits don't carry over, and the allowance resets at 00:00 UTC on the 1st of each month, whatever your billing date.

When the credits run out you can upgrade, set a budget for more ("a $10 budget covers 1,000 AI credits"), or wait for the 1st. Code completions and next edit suggestions don't use credits on paid plans. Our guide to GitHub Copilot AI credits says which credits go first and what each option costs.

GitHub's model pricing page lists Claude models at per-token rates: Claude Opus 5.5 at $4 per million input tokens and $20 per million output tokens, Sonnet 5.5 at $2 and $10. At one cent a credit, a million Opus 5.5 output tokens is 2,000 credits, more than Pro's 1,500 for the month.

Claude Code: time windows#

A Claude plan has no per-token price. Usage is counted in two windows. Pro has a baseline allowance per 5-hour session, which Max 5x and Max 20x multiply by 5 and 20. A weekly limit across all models sits on top; on Max, Anthropic's help page says it resets "at a fixed time each week that is assigned to your account".

Anthropic doesn't publish the allowance in tokens or dollars, so you learn your own ceiling by using it. Our guide to the 5-hour limit explains both clocks.

So Copilot runs out once a month, counted in credits. Claude runs out inside a window and comes back hours later.

What Copilot does well#

  • Help as you type. Completions and next edit suggestions are unlimited on paid plans and don't touch your credits. For people who write most of their code themselves, that is the core of the product.
  • Lives where your code lives. Copilot is in the editor, on GitHub.com, in the CLI and as a cloud agent you can assign an issue to. If your team already runs on GitHub, setup is a seat in the org. A work seat and a personal account can sit side by side in Copilot CLI, which holds several GitHub accounts and moves between them with /user switch.
  • Model choice. One subscription reaches models from several companies, Claude among them, priced openly per token.
  • Cheap seats. Business at $19 per seat is less than a Claude Team standard seat.

What Claude Code does well#

  • Long, delegated tasks. Claude Code is built to take a task, read the codebase, run commands and tests, and keep going for many steps. Subagents, plan mode, hooks and skills are all part of the agent itself.
  • Scriptable. claude -p runs it headless in scripts and CI, with --max-turns capping the turns and --max-budget-usd capping the spend. Our headless mode guide has the flags and examples.
  • Flat-priced heavy use. If you use Claude all day, a Max plan's windows are often easier on the wallet than per-token billing. Price a normal week of your usage at API rates to see which side you're on.

Where each one runs short#

Copilot, on heavy agent work:

  • Frontier models spend credits at per-token rates. Pro's 1,500 credits are $15 of tokens, so long Opus sessions use them quickly.
  • The flex part of the allowance can change.

Claude Code:

  • No completions, and one model family.
  • Limits you can't see in advance: a busy morning with parallel agents can use up a 5-hour window before lunch.

Using them together#

The simple split is Copilot for completions in the editor, Claude Code for tasks. They don't conflict, and Claude Code also installs as an extension in VS Code and its forks.

Running both as agents is where it gets messy: two CLIs, two lists of sessions, two places to look. Shuriken is a harness that runs coding agents on your own computers and servers, and Copilot and Claude Code are both among its 67 agents. One project can hold a Claude Code chat and a Copilot chat, each with the sign-in you already have and each on its own branch in its own git worktree, and you can follow both from your phone. With more than one Claude account, hot swapping moves a Claude Code chat to another of your accounts when one nears its limit, inside the running chat. Only add accounts you own and are entitled to use; providers' terms may not allow sharing a subscription sign-in.

Shuriken never bills model usage. Free holds two sources: one Copilot and one Claude. Pro is €49 a month or €490 a year (2 months free), VAT included for EU consumers, for unlimited sources and devices.

For Claude Code against OpenAI's agent, see Claude Code vs Codex. If you already pay for Copilot and Claude, download Shuriken and run them side by side.

Frequently asked questions

Is GitHub Copilot cheaper than Claude Code?

At the entry tier, yes. Copilot Pro is $10 a month for a monthly pool of AI credits (1,500) plus unlimited code completions. Claude Pro, which includes Claude Code, is $20 ($17 billed yearly) for usage per 5-hour window, with a weekly limit on top.

Can I use Claude models in GitHub Copilot?

Yes. GitHub's model pricing page lists Claude Opus 5.5, Sonnet 5.5, Haiku 5.5 and Fable models, each billed per token in AI credits. One AI credit is $0.01.

What are Copilot premium requests now?

As of 22 October 2026, GitHub's plan pages describe monthly AI credits instead. The tokens of each chat or agent step are priced by model and converted at $0.01 a credit, and code completions and next edit suggestions cost no credits on paid plans.

Does Copilot have a command-line agent like Claude Code?

Yes. GitHub says every Copilot plan includes Copilot CLI and the Copilot app. Pro, Pro+ and Max also include Copilot's cloud coding agent, which works on issues and opens pull requests.

Can I use Copilot and Claude Code together?

Yes, they don't conflict. Copilot keeps the completions in your editor while Claude Code, which also installs as a VS Code extension, takes the larger tasks. In Shuriken both run as chats in one project, each with its own sign-in.
