Quick answer#

Claude Max vs Cursor Ultra is $200 a month against $200 a month, for different things. Claude Max 20x buys Claude Code with 20 times Pro's usage per 5-hour session, plus a weekly limit. Cursor Ultra buys an editor and a weekly usage pool for Grok and Cursor's own Composer models; as read on 22 October 2026, Claude models in Cursor are billed on top, at API list price. So if Claude is the model you code with, Max includes it and Cursor charges for it past the $200. If you want Cursor's editor and cloud agents and Grok or Composer does the job for you, Ultra is the plan built for that.

Hours versus a pool#

The biggest difference is what "usage" means on each bill.

Claude Max counts time windows. Anthropic doesn't publish a token or dollar figure for Max. It defines the plan relative to Pro: "20 times the Pro plan's per-session usage allowance". A session window resets every five hours, and a weekly limit across all models sits on top. A heavy morning can use up a window; a heavy week can use up the weekly limit even when each window had room. Our guide to Max 5x vs Max 20x covers how those two clocks feel.

Cursor Ultra counts a pool. Every Cursor tier "includes a pool of AI usage shared across Cursor and Grok". Ultra's pool is 50 times Plus's, and it refreshes weekly, which Cursor sells as "one heavy day never wipes out your whole month". When the pool runs out you buy top-offs or wait.

Where Claude fits in Cursor. Cursor's pricing FAQ says Premium and above "include generous usage of Grok models but do not include an allowance for third-party models", and that third-party models "remain available in Cursor at API list price". So an Opus-heavy day in Cursor costs what it would on Anthropic's API: $4 per million input tokens and $20 per million output tokens for Claude Opus 5.5, with cache hits at $0.20. Cursor lets you set spending caps on that.

Editor versus terminal agent#

Cursor is an editor first. Its agent works inside the files you have open, you review its diffs in place, and its cloud agents run in Cursor's own VMs. It also ships a command-line agent. If you spend the day in an editor and want the agent there, Cursor is shaped around you. Our Cursor comparison goes through its cloud agents in more detail.

Claude Code is an agent first. It started in the terminal and now also runs as IDE extensions, a desktop app and cloud sessions. Anthropic's VS Code docs include an install link for Cursor, so you can run Claude Code inside Cursor on your Claude plan.

Predictability#

Neither plan has a fixed amount of work you can count on.

  • Claude Max: what fits in a window depends on the model, the size of your context and how many agents you run at once. Anthropic doesn't publish the numbers behind the multiples. Parallel agents use a window several times faster.
  • Cursor Ultra: the pool is expressed as a multiple of Plus, with no published token or dollar figure. Claude usage is predictable in one sense: it is exactly API price, so every turn has a cost you can look up.

If you need a hard ceiling on money, Cursor's spending caps on third-party models give you one. If you need a hard ceiling on surprise bills, Claude Max gives you one too: past the limit, nothing is charged unless you turn on usage credits.

What each plan does well#

Claude Max 20x#

The better buy if Claude is your main coding model, because its $200 includes Claude Code usage, while Cursor bills the same work at API rates on top of Ultra. For scale, Anthropic's cost docs put Claude Code at around $150 to $250 per developer per month at API rates, averaged across enterprise deployments. Max also includes $200 a month of API credits for your own scripts, and the same agent runs in the terminal, the editor and the desktop app.

Cursor Ultra#

The better buy if you want an editor with cloud agents, code review and automations from one company, and the models in its pool (Grok and Composer) do the job for you. The weekly refresh is kinder than a 5-hour window if your work comes in bursts.

Where Shuriken fits#

Shuriken is neither a plan nor an editor. It is a harness that runs coding agents on your own computers and servers, with the sign-ins you already have. Claude Code and Cursor's CLI agent are both among its 67 agents, so one project can hold a Claude Code chat on your Max plan next to a Cursor chat on your Cursor plan, each on its own branch.

What it adds for a Max user is hot swapping: Shuriken moves your chats to another of your accounts or sources when one nears its limit (99% by default), inside the running chat, on every device. A chat only moves to another source for its own agent, so a Claude Code chat never turns into a Cursor chat. Only add accounts you own and are entitled to use; providers' terms may not allow sharing a subscription sign-in. When a chat is done, Open in › Cursor opens its worktree in your editor.

Pricing#

  • Claude Max is $100 a month (5x) or $200 a month (20x), in US dollars, for web subscriptions. Claude Pro is $20 a month ($17 a month billed yearly) and includes Claude Code.
  • Cursor is Free $0, Plus $8, Premium $30, Super $100 and Ultra $200 a month, in US dollars before tax. From Premium up, Claude and other third-party models cost extra at API list price; Plus has Grok models only.
  • Shuriken Free is €0 with two sources and two linked devices. Pro is €49 a month or €490 a year (2 months free), VAT included for EU consumers. Shuriken never bills model usage: your agents use your own plans and keys.

OpenAI's $200 tier goes up against Max in Claude Max vs ChatGPT Pro for coding. If you already pay for both Claude and Cursor, download Shuriken and run claude and cursor-agent side by side.

Frequently asked questions

Is Cursor Ultra or Claude Max better value for Claude models?

Claude Max, for Claude models. As read on 22 October 2026, Cursor's paid plans include no allowance for third-party models, so Claude in Cursor is billed separately at API list price: $4 per million input tokens and $20 per million output tokens for Claude Opus 5.5. Claude Max 20x includes Claude Code usage in its $200.

Can I use Claude Code inside Cursor?

Yes. Anthropic's VS Code docs have an install link for the Claude Code extension in Cursor, and the claude command also runs in Cursor's built-in terminal. Either way it uses your Claude sign-in and draws on your Claude plan, not on Cursor's pool.

What does Cursor Ultra include?

Cursor's pricing page lists Ultra at $200 a month with 50x the usage of the $8 Plus plan, in a pool shared across Cursor and Grok that refreshes weekly. It includes cloud agents and automations, Bugbot code reviews and priority model access at peak times.

Does Claude Max have a weekly limit?

Yes. Anthropic's help page on the Max plan says Max 5x and Max 20x multiply Pro's per-session allowance, and a weekly limit across all models sits on top of that, resetting at a fixed time for your account.

Can I run Cursor's agent and Claude Code in Shuriken?

Yes. Both are among Shuriken's 67 coding agents: Claude Code runs as claude, Cursor's CLI agent as cursor-agent. Each chat picks its agent and uses the sign-in you already have, so Claude Code runs on your Claude plan and cursor-agent on your Cursor plan.
