Claude Max 5x vs 20x (2026): what you really get
Claude Max 20x gives 20 times Pro's 5-hour allowance and Max 5x five. Anthropic publishes no weekly multiplier; users report 20x at 1.5 to 2 times 5x.
Contents
Max 20x gives you 20 times Pro's allowance per 5-hour session, and Max 5x gives you five times. Those two multipliers are Anthropic's. For the weekly limit Anthropic publishes no multiplier at all, and community reports put Max 20x at roughly 1.5 to 2 times Max 5x, not four. Max 5x is $100 a month; Max 20x is $200.
In Claude Max vs Max 20x, then, the second $100 buys mostly a bigger 5-hour bucket. Anthropic's Claude Code help page says to consider Max 20x if you're on Max 5x and "consistently hit limits", without saying which limit; that is the question this page answers.
Prices (checked 22 October 2026)#
From claude.com/pricing and Anthropic's Max plan help page, in US dollars:
| Plan | Price | Per-session allowance | Claude Code |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pro | $20 a month, or $17 a month billed yearly ($200 up front) | Baseline | Included |
| Max 5x | $100 a month | 5 × Pro | Included |
| Max 20x | $200 a month | 20 × Pro | Included |
-
Max is billed monthly only. The pricing page: "Both options are billed monthly."
-
These are web subscription prices. Anthropic's help centre says mobile pricing may differ, and the pricing page says prices don't include applicable tax.
-
The pricing page also lists $100 to $200 a month in API credits with Max. Anthropic's help centre says those monthly API credits can't be used in Claude Code or the Claude apps, extra usage included (Anthropic). Don't count them toward your coding budget.
-
Moving from Max 5x to Max 20x mid-cycle "will be charged on a prorated basis for the remainder of your billing cycle", the Max help page says.
Prices change. Check the pricing page on the day you buy.
What "5x" and "20x" multiply in Max vs Max 20x#
The help page has two sentences on it: "Max 5x includes five times the Pro plan's per-session usage allowance" and "Max 20x includes 20 times the Pro plan's per-session usage allowance" (What is the Max plan?). The next line defines the session: "Your session-based usage limit will reset every five hours." Nowhere else does Anthropic state a multiplier.
The rest of the rules are the same for both tiers:
- Limits are shared across Claude and Claude Code. A chat on claude.ai, and Claude Code in VS Code, Cursor or a JetBrains IDE, all come out of the allowance your
claudesessions in the terminal use (Anthropic). - Max has a weekly limit too. It "applies across all models" and "resets at a fixed time each week that is assigned to your account" (What is the Max plan?). The day and time don't move when you subscribe or start work, and Settings › Usage on claude.ai shows the next one.
- Fable has its own, separate weekly limit on Max (Anthropic).
Weekly limits: Anthropic's numbers vs user reports#
Anthropic publishes no weekly number for either Max tier, and no ratio between them.
What exists is community reporting. Suprmind's Max pricing page is a third-party page, modified on 27 August 2026 and marked last verified September 2026. It says the 5x and 20x multipliers apply only to the 5-hour window, and that users see roughly 1.5 to 2 times more weekly usage on Max 20x than on Max 5x. It also passes on one subscriber's report that Anthropic support called the weekly increase "about 1.7x" (Suprmind).
Those are estimates from user reports, not Anthropic figures, and they may have changed since: Anthropic adjusts limits from time to time. We print them because they are the numbers people are buying on, and we label them as estimates.
Two Max 5x accounts vs one Max 20x#
Two Max 5x subscriptions cost $200 a month, the same as one Max 20x. The allowance comes in a different shape:
| One Max 20x | Two Max 5x | |
|---|---|---|
| Price | $200 a month | $200 a month |
| 5-hour allowance | 20 × Pro, in one window | 5 × Pro each, in two separate windows |
| Weekly limit | One Max 20x weekly limit | Two Max 5x weekly limits, one per account |
| Biggest single burst | Larger: one account can use 20 × Pro in five hours | Smaller per account: each window holds 5 × Pro |
| Effort | One account, nothing to manage | Two accounts, something has to switch between them |
The usage bars in Settings › Usage, or /usage in Claude Code, show which of the two limits you run into, and that decides it.
- When the 5-hour window stops you, one Max 20x is simpler: one account, one big bucket.
- When the weekly limit stops you, two Max 5x accounts give you two full weekly limits. If the community estimates hold (20x ≈ 1.5–2 × the weekly of 5x), two 5x weekly limits are at least as much, and possibly more. We can't promise that, because Anthropic doesn't publish the numbers.
- Two accounts help only if your work moves between them. Signing out and back in with
/logoutand/loginevery few hours eats the benefit.
How Shuriken uses two accounts#
Shuriken is a harness: it runs Claude Code, Codex and 60+ other coding agents on your own computers and servers. Add both Max accounts as sources and three features use them.
- Automatic source switching. When the account in use reaches your switch point (99% by default, adjustable from 50% to 100%) or Claude reports a limit, your chats move to the account with the most room. A Claude Code chat moves on its next request, the request that hit the limit is replayed, and the conversation carries on.
- Session limits. With Start unused session limits on (Sources › Switch settings), the second account gets one tiny background request while you work on the first. Its window starts, so its limit is already on its way back when the first runs low. Your chats stay where they are.
- Distribute. Every 15, 20, 30, 45 or 60 minutes (15 by default), chats move to the account with the most left, if it is at least 5 points ahead, so neither weekly limit runs out first.
Shuriken shows both accounts' 5-hour and weekly usage side by side, so you'll know quickly whether two 5x accounts suit the way you work. Automatic switching and session limits are on every Shuriken plan, including Free, which holds two sources.
The rules#
Anthropic's consumer terms say you may not share your login or make your account available to anyone else (Consumer Terms). They don't spell out a rule on one person holding more than one account.
On the two-account route, both accounts should be yours: in your name, paid by you, used by you. Splitting one with a friend is the sharing the terms forbid, and buying accounts from anyone is out too. Nobody can promise you how a provider will treat a given account, and we won't pretend to. The phone-number check and the clauses on sharing are in can you have multiple Claude accounts?
Who should pick which#
| What stops you | Pick |
|---|---|
| You came from Pro and hit the 5-hour limit most days; your weekly usage is comfortable; $100 a month is the budget | Max 5x |
| You run out of the 5-hour window on Max 5x, often in long single sessions; you want one account and nothing to manage; you've checked the weekly limit isn't the problem | Max 20x |
| The weekly limit stops you, not the 5-hour one; your work splits into several parallel chats; you're happy for a tool to switch between accounts, and both are yours | Two Max 5x |
Not sure you need Max at all? Claude Pro vs Max for Claude Code starts one step lower.
A plan change isn't the only way past a limit. Usage credits keep a paid plan working after its 5-hour or weekly limit at API rates, and can carry you through a bad week (Anthropic). Remember too that claude.ai draws on the same limits. How the weekly window works is in Claude weekly limit explained.

Frequently asked questions
Is Claude Max 20x worth it?
Yes, if Max 5x runs dry inside the 5-hour window and you want one account. If the weekly limit is what stops you, check that first: community reports say 20x raises it by much less than four times.
Does Max 20x mean 20 times the weekly usage?
Not by anything Anthropic publishes. Its Max help page gives the 5x and 20x multipliers for the per-session allowance and no weekly multiplier. Community reports put the weekly gap between Max 5x and Max 20x at roughly 1.5 to 2 times, an estimate, not an Anthropic figure.
Can I hold two Claude Max accounts?
Anthropic's consumer terms forbid sharing your login or making your account available to anyone else. They don't spell out a rule on one person holding several accounts. If you do, use accounts you own and pay for, and never share them.
How much do Claude Pro, Max 5x and Max 20x cost?
On 22 October 2026, claude.com/pricing listed Pro at $20 a month (or $17 a month billed yearly), Max 5x at $100 a month and Max 20x at $200 a month, for web subscriptions and before tax.
