Can you have multiple Claude accounts?
Yes. Anthropic's Consumer Terms and Usage Policy set no limit on how many Claude accounts one person may hold, and its phone verification allows three accounts per number; what they forbid is sharing a login, and creating or using accounts to avoid detection, get around guardrails or evade a ban.

Yes, you can have multiple Claude accounts. Anthropic's Consumer Terms and Usage Policy set no limit on how many accounts one person may hold, and its own phone verification lets three accounts verify with one number. What the rules forbid is sharing a login, and creating or using accounts to avoid detection, get around guardrails or evade a ban. We can't promise that any setup is safe from enforcement, and we won't pretend to.
We build a tool that switches between Claude accounts, so this question comes to us often. Below is what the terms say, quoted and linked, and where we draw our own lines. It's our reading, not legal advice.
What Anthropic's terms say#
Free, Pro and Max are covered by Anthropic's Consumer Terms. Team, Enterprise and the API are covered by the Commercial Terms, per the Claude Code legal page. The Usage Policy applies to all of them. We read them on 24 October 2026: the Consumer Terms shown were effective 8 October 2025, and the Usage Policy shown is the version effective 12 November 2026.
Sharing a login: clearly no#
Section 2, "Account creation and access":
You may not share your Account login information, Anthropic API key, or Account credentials with anyone else. You also may not make your Account available to anyone else.
That's the version for most countries; the one for the EEA, Switzerland and the UK says the same in one sentence.
That one isn't ambiguous. One person, one login. A Max plan split between two developers is exactly what this sentence rules out. The Usage Policy's abuse list also forbids reselling or proxying access to Claude, "including services that route requests through consumer subscriptions", so buying access from a reseller is out too.
Holding several accounts: no cap, and a number from Anthropic#
We searched the Consumer Terms and the Usage Policy for a sentence on how many accounts one person may have, or on opening a second one, and found none. The only number Anthropic gives is in its Help Center article Verify your phone number:
We only allow a maximum of three Claude accounts to be verified with the same phone number.
The Help Center also answers "I have multiple accounts – how can I switch between them?" for a personal account and a Team or Enterprise account on one email (Log in to your Claude account).
Where the Usage Policy names multiple accounts#
Its "Do Not Abuse Our Platform" list ties each mention to a purpose:
Coordinate malicious activity across multiple accounts, or create multiple accounts, to avoid detection, circumvent product guardrails, or generate identical or similar inputs that otherwise violate our Usage Policy
Circumvent a ban through the use of a different account, such as the creation of a new account, use of an existing account, or providing access to a person or entity that was previously banned
The same list rules out "automation in account creation". The version before this one, effective 15 September 2025, has the first line without the words "or create multiple accounts", and the ban line word for word. So a second account made to dodge a ban or a guardrail is out; a second account you simply own and pay for is not named.
The lines that come closest for everything else#
- Section 3 of the Consumer Terms forbids "bypassing any of our systems or protective measures".
- Section 3 also forbids accessing the Services "through automated or non-human means, whether through a bot, script, or otherwise", except via an API key or where Anthropic explicitly permits it.
- The termination clause lets Anthropic suspend or terminate access "at any time without notice" if it believes you have breached the terms (the EEA, Swiss and UK versions say "materially breached").
The Claude Code legal page adds two:
- "Advertised usage limits for Pro and Max plans assume ordinary, individual usage of Claude Code and the Agent SDK."
- Subscription sign-in (OAuth) "is intended exclusively for purchasers" of the subscription plans, for ordinary use of Claude Code and Anthropic's own apps.
The terms don't say whether two personal plans held for more room count as "bypassing" anything, and we won't guess on Anthropic's behalf. If your setup depends on the answer, ask Anthropic support before you pay.
What actually gets Claude accounts banned#
Anthropic's appeals article gives three reasons it may ban an account: repeated violations of the Usage Policy, account creation from an unsupported location, and Terms of Service violations. The Usage Policy says how it finds them: "Anthropic's Safeguards Team implements detection and monitoring to enforce our Usage Policy. If we suspect that you may have violated our Usage Policy, we may warn you or throttle, limit, suspend, or terminate your access to our products and services."
Having two accounts is on none of those lists. Creating one from a country Anthropic doesn't serve is.
Anthropic doesn't publish how often it bans the wrong person, but it says its systems can get it wrong. From Our approach to user safety: "These features are not failsafe, and we may make mistakes through false positives or false negatives." If you think a ban was a mistake, log in at claude.ai with the banned account and appeal there; Anthropic says its Safeguards team "can further investigate why your account was disabled." Don't open another account while you wait, because the ban line quoted above covers exactly that. The appeal, step by step, is in what to do after a Claude ban.
What that means in practice#
Our reading, case by case:
| Situation | What the terms say |
|---|---|
| Two people using one login | Not allowed (Section 2) |
| Giving a friend your API key | Not allowed under the Consumer Terms (Section 2 names API keys too) |
| A Team seat from work plus your own Pro or Max | Two accounts, each yours, under different terms. Check your employer's rules too |
| Two personal plans, both yours, paid by you | No cap on accounts; whether it counts as getting around a limit isn't addressed. Your call |
| Buying or renting someone else's account | Not yours to use. Don't |
Work plus personal is the common case and the cleanest one: the company owns one account, you own the other, and nobody shares anything. The case to check is work code on the personal plan, which the Consumer Terms then cover (what that changes for training, retention and your employer).
Why people end up with more than one#
Three reasons come up, and only one of them is hard:
- Work and personal. A Team seat for the job, a Pro or Max for your own projects. Two owners, two sets of terms, no overlap.
- Client work. A client adds you to their organisation so their code runs on their plan. That's their account for their work, under their agreement with Anthropic.
- More room. Someone hits the 5-hour limit or the weekly limit and wonders whether a second plan beats a bigger one. This is the case where the terms question actually bites.
If more room is the reason, compare the official options first#
Anthropic sells more room in several ways. None of these three raises a terms question:
- A bigger plan. Max 20x gives 20 times Pro's usage per session, per Anthropic's Max plan page. Our Pro vs Max guide helps you pick.
- Usage credits. Pay as you go past your plan's limit, with a monthly spend cap.
- An API key from your own Claude Console organisation, billed per token with no 5-hour window. Our API key vs subscription guide does the maths.
If one of these covers you, you never have to read Section 3 twice.
What we won't do#
Whatever the terms turn out to say, we don't do these:
- We don't sell, rent or pool accounts. No account marketplace, no "shared Max" offers, nothing of the kind.
- We never suggest buying accounts to get around limits.
- We don't bill model usage. Your agents run on plans and keys you pay for yourself.
- We don't hide the requests we send. Shuriken's session limits start an idle account's 5-hour window with one tiny request, sent in the background through that account's own sign-in, from the one computer it's signed in on. It counts toward that account's usage, and you can turn it off under Sources › Switch settings › Start unused session limits.
How Shuriken treats your accounts#
In Shuriken, an account or API key you add is a source. Shuriken uses only the sources you add, and we ask that you add only ones you own and are entitled to use.
- Switching moves your chats between your own sources when one reaches your switch point (99% by default) or a limit. It never touches anyone else's. How it works: switch Claude accounts without logging out.
- A banned account's chat stays put. When Anthropic disables, suspends or restricts an account, Shuriken stops the chat that was running on it and doesn't move it to another account, because the Usage Policy lists carrying on with "use of an existing account" as getting around a ban. The chat links the appeal.
- One account is fine. Shuriken is useful with one source. Free includes two.
Letting someone else use your account#
Don't, whatever tool does it. Section 2 of the Consumer Terms says you may not "make your Account available to anyone else", so a personal Free, Pro or Max plan stays with the person who holds it, and sharing it puts the account at risk.
If several people in your organisation need Claude Code, give each one a Team seat, or use an API key from your organisation's Claude Console, which sits under the Commercial Terms. The Claude Code legal page says its credential rules don't restrict customers provisioning their own keys "for use by the customer's own authorized users", as long as the usage is billed to the key owner and not resold.
A checklist before you add a second account#
- It's in your name and you pay for it.
- You made it from a supported location, with your own phone number.
- You signed in through Anthropic's own sign-in.
- Nobody else uses it.
- It isn't standing in for an account Anthropic disabled.
- You know which terms cover it: Consumer for Free, Pro and Max; Commercial for Team, Enterprise and API.
- If it's a work seat, your employer is fine with how you use it.
- You accept that enforcement decisions are Anthropic's, not ours.
If all eight are true and you want your accounts to take turns without the log-out-log-in routine, download Shuriken and add them under Sources.

Frequently asked questions
Can I have two Claude Max accounts?
Nothing we read in Anthropic's Consumer Terms (effective 8 October 2025) or Usage Policy caps how many accounts one person may hold, and Anthropic's phone verification allows three accounts per number. Both accounts must be yours alone: sharing a login is forbidden.
Can I get banned for having multiple Claude accounts?
Having them is not on any list we found. The Usage Policy bans creating or using accounts to avoid detection, get around guardrails or evade a ban, and we won't promise that any setup is safe from enforcement.
Can Anthropic see that my accounts belong to the same person?
Anthropic doesn't say what it links. Its Usage Policy says its Safeguards team runs detection and monitoring, and new accounts verify a phone number. Don't plan around your accounts looking unrelated.
What should I do if I was banned anyway?
Log in at claude.ai with the banned account and fill in the appeal form Anthropic links there. Don't open a new account to carry on: the Usage Policy lists that as getting around a ban.
Do I need several accounts to use Shuriken?
No. Shuriken works with one account. If you have more than one, it switches between the ones you added. Free includes two sources.
