How to install Shuriken on Mac, Windows and Linux
Install Shuriken from shuriken.sh on Mac, Windows or Linux. The Mac app is notarised by Apple; Windows may warn once, as its installer isn't signed yet.

To install Shuriken, download it from shuriken.sh/download for a Mac with Apple silicon on macOS 13 or later, Windows 10 or 11, or Linux (AppImage or .deb), open it and sign in. On Windows the first open may ask once: choose More info › Run anyway. After that it updates itself.
Windows asks because the installer isn't signed with a Windows code-signing certificate yet. The Mac app is signed with our Apple Developer ID and notarised by Apple. A server that runs your agents with no screen attached is added from the app, not downloaded.
What you need#
| System | Version | Chips | Files |
|---|---|---|---|
| macOS | 13 Ventura or later | Apple silicon (M1 or newer) | .dmg or .zip |
| Windows | 10 or 11 | x64 | Installer (.exe) or .zip |
| Linux | Desktop Linux, also ChromeOS's Linux | x64 and Arm | AppImage or .deb |
| Server | Linux, Windows, or macOS on Apple silicon, no screen needed | Added from the app |
You also need the coding agents you want to run and your own sign-ins for them. Shuriken runs the agents on your computer with your plans and keys; it never bills model usage.
Install on a Mac#
- On the download page, download Shuriken for Mac. It runs on Apple silicon (M1 or newer); Intel Macs aren't supported.
- Open the .dmg and drag Shuriken to Applications.
- Open Shuriken. If macOS asks whether to open an app downloaded from the internet, choose Open.
The app is signed with our Apple Developer ID and notarised by Apple, so there's no Open Anyway step. Builds up to 5.0.0 weren't notarised; if you still have one, it updates itself to a notarised build.
Install on Windows#
- Download the installer (.exe) or the .zip.
- Run it. If Windows SmartScreen says it protected your PC, choose More info › Run anyway.
- Open Shuriken and sign in.
SmartScreen warns because the app has no Windows code-signing certificate yet. What is signed are the updates: from version 5.0, Windows and Linux check each update against Shuriken's signature before installing it. Our post on Shuriken on Windows covers the rest of the Windows setup.
Install on Linux#
- Download the AppImage (any distribution) or the .deb (Debian, Ubuntu and their relatives), x64 or Arm.
- For the AppImage: make it executable (
chmod +x Shuriken*.AppImage) and run it. For the .deb: runsudo apt install ./followed by the file's name. - Open Shuriken and sign in.
If the AppImage won't start and mentions FUSE, install libfuse2 (on Ubuntu 24.04 the package is libfuse2t64), or use the .deb, which doesn't need it.
Add a server#
A server is a machine with no screen that runs your agents: a home server, a spare Mac mini, a cloud VM. You don't download anything by hand:
- In the app, open Settings › Devices › Add device and choose a server.
- Run the install steps it shows on the server. They work for an hour, for your account only.
- The server appears in your devices. It runs as a service, restarts on its own, and updates itself only to signed releases, waiting until no agent is mid-turn.
The installer also sets up the agent CLIs and the GitHub sign-in. More on the server page.
After installing#
Sign in, add a project, and add the accounts or keys your agents should use. Our guide on setting up Shuriken takes it from there. On your phone, the web app at app.shuriken.sh follows every chat until the native iPhone and Android apps arrive, planned for November 2026.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Mac app notarised by Apple?
Yes. Since 5.1, Shuriken for Mac is signed with our Apple Developer ID and notarised by Apple, so it opens without a trip to System Settings. Builds up to 5.0.0 weren't, and needed Open Anyway in Privacy & Security.
Why does Windows say it protected my PC?
SmartScreen warns about apps without a Windows code-signing certificate, which Shuriken doesn't have yet. Choose More info › Run anyway. Updates after that are checked against Shuriken's signature before they install.
What do I need to run Shuriken?
macOS 13 Ventura or later on Apple silicon (M1 or newer); Windows 10 or 11 on x64; or Linux on x64 or Arm, including ChromeOS's Linux. Plus the coding agents you want to use and your own sign-ins for them.
Can I run Shuriken on a server without a screen?
Yes. Add it from the app with Settings › Devices › Add device. The install steps work for an hour, and the server then runs as a service and updates itself to signed releases.
How do I check that my download is genuine?
Download only from shuriken.sh, which serves every file over HTTPS. Once Shuriken is installed, it checks each update against our release key before installing it.
