Will Claude plans get cheaper? What the record shows

Will Claude plans get cheaper? Not in price so far: Pro has been $20 a month since 2023, the $100 and $200 tiers unchanged since 2025, as API prices fell.

Will Claude plans get cheaper? Going by the record, not in price. Pro has cost $20 a month since 2023, and the $100 and $200 plans (Max and Ultra since 30 October 2026) have kept their prices since 2025. Over the same years API token prices fell sharply, and usage limits went up and down. Anthropic has changed what a plan gives you, not what it costs.

We pay for several Claude plans ourselves, so we'd like the answer to be yes.

Have Claude plans got cheaper so far?#

Not on the price tag. The plan prices, by date:

  • 7 September 2023: Claude Pro launches at "$20 (US) or £18 (UK)" a month (Anthropic).
  • 9 April 2025: Max arrives at $100 or $200 a month (Bloomberg).
  • 22 October 2026: Pro is still $20 a month, or $17 a month billed yearly (Claude pricing). Anthropic's help page still lists Max 5x (now Max) at $100 and Max 20x (now Ultra) at $200 (Claude Help Center).
  • 30 October 2026: the two Max tiers are renamed at the same prices. Max 5x is now Max ($100) and Max 20x is now Ultra ($200), and a verified Ultra account has no 5-hour limit, only weekly ones (Claude Help Center).

The API went the other way. Anthropic's pricing page lists the older models next to the new ones, in USD per million tokens (Claude docs):

Model Input Output
Opus 4.1 $15 $75
Opus 4.5 to Opus 5 $5 $25
Opus 5.5 $4 $20
Sonnet 4.6 $3 $15
Sonnet 5 and Sonnet 5.5 $2 $10

Opus 5.5 came out on 22 September 2026, and Anthropic wrote that it "requires less compute to serve than Opus 5, and its pricing reflects that" (Anthropic). Sonnet 5 was announced at an introductory $2 and $10. The pricing page now says that became the standard price, and the planned rise to $3 and $15 was dropped.

Limits moved in both directions in 2026 alone:

  • March: tighter 5-hour sessions at peak hours.
  • 6 May: Claude Code's 5-hour limits doubled.
  • 13 May to 13 September: weekly limits 50% higher in Claude Code.
  • From 14 September: a weekly level 25% above the old one, which is below the summer boost.

Each change, with its source, is in every Claude usage limit change in 2026.

What that pattern suggests about cheaper Claude plans#

This is a reading of the record, not a forecast. The number on the plan page is the one that hasn't moved. When Anthropic had more capacity to give, or less, it changed the limits behind the price: a bigger 5-hour window, a weekly boost, a reset you can save.

Three columns. Plan prices, flat: Pro at $20 a month since 2023, Max at $100 or $200 since 2025, the same in October 2026. API prices, down: Opus 4.1 at $15 input and $75 output per million tokens, Opus 5.5 at $4 and $20. Limits, up and down: tighter 5-hour sessions at peak hours in March 2026, Claude Code's 5-hour limits doubled in May, and from September a weekly level 25% above the old one.
The plan price held while API prices fell and limits moved both ways.

We think that is deliberate. A round $20 is easy to sell and easy to budget for. The cost of serving the models shows up in the limits instead, and the API table says that cost has been falling.

So if Claude gets "cheaper" for you, expect it as more work per month for the same $20, $100 or $200, with the same number on the page. We could be wrong, and Anthropic's pricing page says plans and prices may change at its discretion (Claude pricing).

What would change the price itself#

Three things could move the price itself, and none of them can be dated from outside Anthropic.

  • Rival plans with similar coding limits selling for less. That pressure lands on the price, not only on limits.
  • Models that cost less to run. They give Anthropic room, though so far it has spent that room on limits and on the API.
  • A new tier. Max came as a new row on the page in 2025, not as a new price for Pro, and a cheaper plan would more likely arrive the same way.

What you can do today#

You don't need a price cut to get more from what you pay.

  1. Pick the right plan size. If you hit the 5-hour limit every afternoon on Pro, Max at $100 may be the cheaper fix than usage credits. Pro vs Max for Claude Code and Claude Max vs Ultra have the numbers for each plan.
  2. Pay yearly for Pro if you'll keep it. It is $17 a month billed yearly instead of $20 (Claude pricing).
  3. Use the accounts you already pay for fully. An idle account whose 5-hour window never starts is money spent on nothing.

How Shuriken helps with the last one#

We built Shuriken for that third point. 5-hour clocks start an idle Claude account's 5-hour window with one tiny background request, once per window, so its limit comes back as early as it can; the setting is Start unused session limits under Sources › Settings (5-hour clocks). Hot swapping moves your chats to another of your accounts when one nears its limit, so a full account doesn't stop the work (Hot swapping).

Switch settings in Shuriken's Sources settings: Switch automatically on, Switch at 99%, How set to When one runs out, a 5-hour clocks section with Start unused 5-hour clocks switched on and a note on how it works, Use the API when no subscription is available switched off, and the five rules for How the next source is picked.
The switch that starts an idle account's 5-hour window sits in Sources' switch settings.

Neither makes a plan cheaper. They make sure the plans you already pay for get used. Use accounts you own and are entitled to use; providers' terms may not allow sharing a subscription sign-in. Try Shuriken.

Frequently asked questions

Has the price of Claude Pro ever changed?

Not the monthly price. Claude Pro launched on 7 September 2023 at $20 a month in the US, and on 22 October 2026 it was still $20 a month, or $17 a month billed yearly.

Are Claude API prices going down?

They have been. Opus 4.1 was $15 per million input tokens and $75 per million output; Opus 5.5, released on 22 September 2026, is $4 and $20.

Is there a cheaper Claude plan than Max for Claude Code?

Pro at $20 a month includes Claude Code. Max at $100 gives five times Pro's usage every five hours and every week, and Ultra (formerly Max 20x) at $200 ten times Pro's each week. Team seats and the API are the other routes.

Will Anthropic lower the Max price?

Nobody outside Anthropic knows, and Anthropic says prices and plans may change. So far, value has moved through limits rather than price.
