GPT-6.1 Sol vs GPT-6 Sol

GPT-6.1 Sol costs the same as GPT-6 Sol, $2 input and $10 output per 1M tokens, but its cached input is half the price: $0.10 against $0.20. Both read up to 1.05M tokens. They were first listed on the API a week apart, GPT-6 Sol on 22 September 2026 and GPT-6.1 Sol on 29 September.

What changed in GPT-6.1 Sol

By the numbers we track, only the cache price. Context (1.05M tokens), output (128K tokens), inputs (text and images) and the input and output prices are the same on both.

Both dates are first API listings, not OpenAI announcement days, so read the week between them as approximate.

What the cheaper cache saves

Uncached, our sessions cost the same on both: $0.65 for a quick fix, $10.80 for the feature session and $97.50 for a long agent day. With 90% of prompts read from the cache, GPT-6.1 Sol costs $2.59 against $3.02 for the feature session and $20.55 against $24.60 for the long day.

Scores

The only score we can cite between them is GPT-6 Sol's 49.3% on FrontierCode 1.1, as Anthropic quoted it. We found none for GPT-6.1 Sol, so the benchmarks can't tell you whether the newer model is better. Sonnet 5.5 against GPT-6.1 Sol sets the newer Sol against Anthropic's model at the same price.

What a coding session costs

Our own estimate from the list prices above, for three sessions we define: a coding agent resends the conversation with every call, so prompts are large and grow. "Cached" assumes 90% of prompt tokens are read from the prompt cache and leaves out cache write fees. A long-prompt price applies when a call's prompt is over its threshold. Work out your own mix with the token cost calculator.

Value for money and release gap

GPT-6.1 Sol is dated 7 days later (GPT-6.1 Sol: first API listing; GPT-6 Sol: first API listing). Price per point divides our feature-session cost by a published score: lower means more score for the money. It is a rough lens, not a ranking.
